EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA - THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA - Sat., May 18, 2002 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Mike McComb, Bend, Ore., and his buddy Rick Killingsworth hit the jackpot on Thurs. They found some floating debris and ended up in double digits on school dorado. This is the first time this year for double-digit dorado. Bob Veverka, of Underhill, Vermont, well-known fly-tier and author of “Innovative Saltwater Flies,” stopped by the house with his wife Diane. He had spent a week at Punta Colorado and had a great time catching marlin, dorado and jacks on the fly, but was once again was not able to put it together and get a rooster. He gave me one of his East Cape Sardines and I took it out yesterday morning and caught three small roosters on it in front of La Ribera from the beach. This weekend I think every hotel is full with tournaments going on at all of them. This is the busiest weekend by far for 2002 AIR & SEA It reached 90 degrees during the day with overnight temps falling to a comfortable low 70's. Sunny Hi 90° Lo 70° Wind: 0 mph Humidity: 81% Dewpoint: 61° Visibility: 2 Water Temps 75-79 . OFFSHORE: Marlin and a few sailfish dominated the count with a few large dorado mixed in. . INSHORE: Sierra, jacks and small roosters filled the bill both at La Ribera and in front of Punta Colorada. . BEACH: For the smaller roosters it is hard to beat La Ribera right now. For sight casting, Rooster Alley is holding lots of medium sized jacks and roosters. BILLFISH - Plenty of boats sporting multiple flags and now we are seeing more sailfish as well. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still only an occasional fish showing up in the counts. DORADO - Some big guys wandering around and if you get lucky and find the right floating debris there are some of the schoolies. ROOSTERFISH - La Ribera for the smaller guys and better quality from Punta Colorada to the lighthouse. JACK CREVALLE - Best action around the bait receiver at Punta Colorada. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Just a few miles off shore throughout Palmas Bay. PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few bigger guys seen feeding on sardinia near Punta Pescadero. SIERRA - They are back and you might need wire bite tippet. Something else that seems to work pretty well is to use longer shank hooks to tie your flies on, keeping the teeth away from the tippet. AIR & SEA: High clouds and some wind in the afternoons Air Temperature 62 - 75 Water Temperature 60 - 68. YELLOWTAIL - Best bet down deep at the entrada. CORVINA - A few schools spotted near the pier. SNOOK - Devil's Curve or Mario's Spot are the best bet right now.
