EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA - THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA - Wed., May 22, 2002 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: John Sturges, North Point, Fla. came a long way looking for some extraordinary fishing and I don’t think he is disappointed. He keeps talking about a “Baja Grand Slam” and I think he may be close – five roosters, jacks and pompano the first day. A couple of marlin and four dorado to 40-pounds the second day and yesterday (5/21) two marlin and a wahoo. He is headed out again today and I can't wait to see what he comes up with. Kevin Ferrel, Mill Valley, Calif., after fishing a tournament at Rancho Leonero, fished two days with us on the beach and from a super panga. He gave a pretty good accounting of himself coming up with a list of species including roosterfish, jack crevalle and sierra. AIR & SEA – Nice spring weather with highs to 90 and the lows in the 70's. Little wind until Tues. and then it blew pretty hard in the afternoon. No wind early this morning so hopefully it is gone. Sunny Hi 90° Lo 69° Wind: 0 mph Humidity: 81% Water Temps 75-79 . OFFSHORE: Plenty of action for the billfish and large dorado, more sailfish seem to be coming into the area and I am sure the blue marlin are right behind them. . INSHORE: Jacks and pompano boiling around the boat that sound like five gallon buckets being dropped like bombs, schools of small roosters acting like a wolf pack devouring anything that gets in front of them including the fly. . BEACH: Best action early morning at Punta Colorada when the sardina gets pushed up against the beach in front of the hotel. Ladyfish, croaker, roosters and jack have all found the bait and are just hammering it. BILLFISH - The bite continues and the interesting thing is the fish are keying on sardina, which is a bonus for the flyrodder. Small flies are the tickets right now and I am talking only 3 to 6 inches in length. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still not here. Now, that’s very weird. DORADO - Some toads out there, definitely 12-weight material. ROOSTERFISH - Saw a school feeding the other day with their dorsal fins 12-inches out of the water. JACK CREVALLE - We saw a school of cruising jacks near Punta Colorada that had some huge fish mixed in. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Outside La Ribera a few miles there are acres of them. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Slowed down on the larger fish with a few of the smaller guys on the rocky points. SIERRA - Punta Colorada bay has a few bait receivers that are attracting a variety of critters including a fair number of sierra. The problem is that there are quality jacks and pompano so we are reluctant to use wire. Several of our clients this week scored on snook, grouper and a few pargo. Mike Bennett arrived from Loreto where the winds chased him out and is looking forward to two days of exploring the mangroves with his flyrod in hand. AIR & SEA: High clouds and some wind in the afternoons Air Temperature 65 - 75 Water Temperature 60 - 68. YELLOWTAIL - Just not much going off at the moment. CORVINA - Pretty common throughout the bay. SNOOK - Devil's Curve or Mario's Spot are the best bet right now. HALIBUT - Continues to be the most consistent bite. SIERRA - Slow this week.
