EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA - THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA - Sat, May 25, 2002 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Spent a pleasant morning with Southern California fishing radio hosts Pete Gray and Marty Milner catching lots of skipjack and a few pargo in front of Rancho Leonero. Pete and Marty were down for their annual fishing tournament featuring the pop musical group The Dorados. http://www.dorados.com/ In addition to great fishing, the Dorados performed every night on the porch and really had the joint jumping. They were also on hand to greet Lori Ann Murphy, http://www.reel-women.com/ who brought down a group of gals looking for adventure and they are finding it! Their first day on the water the group had skipjack, yellowfin tuna, a marlin and Lori Ann caught a 20-pound wahoo. The next morning, they headed out on the ATV's looking like a chapter of the Hell's Angels, but the flyrods in hand revealed they were not. While they caught a few smaller fish from the beach they didn't get the grande roosters and jacks they saw. One jack did come streaking in to take the fly and the whole group screamed so loud he turned and hauled tail. AIR & SEA - Strong wind in the afternoon both Wed. and Thurs., but by Fri. it had slackened considerable. Today (Sat.) morning is flat calm and with little surf. High clouds and haze Hi 90° Lo 69° Wind: 0 mph Humidity: 81% Water Temps 79-81 . OFFSHORE: Plenty to look at including dorado, marlin, sailfish and a few wahoo. The problem is they seem to be plugged with bait and not very aggressive. . INSHORE: All the wind the last few days roiled the water over and it is going to take a few days to clean up. There are few roosters and jacks here and there, but not the concentration we were seeing before the wind. . BEACH: Same story here. The wave action fouled everything up. I took a ride early this morning and most of the bait I saw was mullet and not the schools of sardina we were seeing earlier in the week. BILLFISH - The best color teaser was a pink and white Zucker 3.5. Pairing it up with a pink and white Billfish Baby made for a very successful combination. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Finally a few; not a bonanza though. DORADO - Same deal they are out there, just not very hungry. ROOSTERFISH - Saw several feeding on mullet from the arroyo before Scott Glenn’s house to La Ribera JACK CREVALLE - A few cruising the seam mid-day at Rooster Alley. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Outside La Ribera a few miles there are acres of them. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Caught a few on the reef in front of Rancho Leonero. When they did get out, they did find a few fish scattered here and there. The strong tides this week may have helped stir things up as well. AIR & SEA: High clouds and some wind in the afternoons Air Temperature 65 - 75 Water Temperature 60 - 66. YELLOWTAIL - A few fish picked up at the entrada. CORVINA - Pretty tough this week. SNOOK - After the wind, one boat found a few just short of Devil's Curve and a few more at Los Barriles channel. HALIBUT - Even the halibut quit biting.
