EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA - THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA - Sat., June 22, 2002 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: A band of cold water moved in along the beach and slowed down fishing somewhat. From early in the week, the water temps began to drop along the shore and got as low as 69-70. Most of our catch was restricted to smaller roosters, jacks and other beach-feeding species. On Fri. (6/21), the cold water receded and we had warmer water down as far as Punta Colorada. We immediately began seeing large schools of pompano, which were biting small bonefish-style Clousers. Still quite a few small roosters and the bonefish were biting again. I can't thank the folks at http://terrafin.com enough for the great Sea Surface Temperature maps they provide online. If you haven’t checked out their website you should. AIR & SEA - Strong east winds on Wed. and Thurs. caused rough seas on the outside. Yesterday the east wind was considerably less and the seas calmer. Hi 88° Lo 74° Wind: Strong mid-afternoon Humidity: 38% Dewpoint: 61° Visibility: 12 Water Temps 79-84 except for close to shore . OFFSHORE: Rough seas slowed the action down Wed. and Thurs. and then on Fri. it seemed like most of the boats were sporting multiple catch flags for billfish, dorado, skipjack and a few small tuna . INSHORE: With rough conditions on the outside, we saw a lot more boats come back in early working close to shore with good success on skipjack, some large roosters and a few dorado. BEACH: Stay away from the colder water and you will do fine. We had a group from San Diego that caught small roosters, pompano, even a halibut and another angler from Oregon who caught limits of bonefish . . . whatever that means. BILLFISH - Again, rough seas lessened the pressure and the counts dropped significantly. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Actually only an incidental catch. DORADO - Bigger guys are found trolling and a few schools found near anything floating. ROOSTERFISH - Mostly smaller guys from the beach with the larger ones being found close to shore by trolling sardina teasers. JACK CREVALLE - The beach produced a few to 15 pounds; on the boats a few larger ones were found. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Pretty much everywhere a few miles offshore, I could even see large schools from the beach near the lighthouse yesterday. PARGO AND CABRILLA - All the rock reefs holding a few smaller ones. SIERRA - Still a few around, Rancho Leonero's pier has produced a few this week and I keep hearing about guys being “bit off,” which sounds like sierra. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatch.htm MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., June 22, 2002 IN GENERAL: Warmer weather prevailed this week and the wind did subside. It seems there are lots of langostina (red crab) everywhere inside the bay and outside the entrance. Maybe this is what is keeping the fish full and not very cooperative. AIR & SEA: Clear sunny skies with little wind Air Temperature 60 - 72 Water Temperature 60 - 66 YELLOWTAIL - A few smaller fish reported outside the entrance. CORVINA - A few here and there throughout the bay. SNOOK - Almejas bay has the warmest water and would be where I would be looking if I was up there. HALIBUT - Most of the sandy beaches have a few. SIERRA - Not much going on. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatchmagbay.htm
