REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA - THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA - Sat., July 13, 2002 EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Water temperatures jumped back up to the normal ranges this week which was just in time for Bill Meyers, Klamath Falls, Ore., and his family to have fun day catching dorado on the fly to 20 pounds. Inshore, roosterfish slowed down a click late this week with only a few fish coming to the mullet teaser. We did catch several up to 10 pounds. Maybe with the water warming the sardina will show up again. With the lack of smaller bait it has been tough to keep the dorado and tuna around the boat long enough for the flyrodder to get their shots with the fly. Please note that our Baja Fly Fishing Forum has moved to a new address: http://www.bajafly.com/discussion/ AIR & SEA - Some high clouds and light breezes in the p.m. Hi 98° Lo 76° Wind: N /9 mph Humidity: 55% Dewpoint: 69° Visibility: 15 Water Temps 79 - 84 OFFSHORE: Warmer water throughout the area should help settle things down and correct some of the inconsistency we have been seeing from day-to-day. There was a report of one larger tuna this week in the 100+ class; maybe there will be more of the same this week. INSHORE: Shark buoys off of Punta Pescadero produced the best action for dorado. Most of the tuna were found under the porpoise. BEACH: Find a mullet school and stay with it. The roosters will show up sooner or later and you’d better be ready. Try using larger fly with more brown than olive, with a white belly and flash. For pompano, try a small Clouser or even a Crazy Charlie in olive or chartreuse. BILLFISH - They are here in volume and you can get the shots if you are patient. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Lots of football size with an occasional larger one. DORADO - Lots of free swimmers and some under the shark buoys at Punta Pescadero. ROOSTERFISH - Up and down this week but still pretty good. JACK CREVALLE - A few large schools close to the lighthouse at Punta Arena. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Not much pressure this week. Everyone’s looking for other species. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock reefs are your best bet right now. SIERRA - From the pier to the reef in front of Rancho Leonero is the best bet. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatch.htm Sat., July 13, 2002 MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Most of the warmer water is south below Punta Tosca and is holding some dorado. No one we know of was able to locate any tuna out as far as 35 miles. AIR & SEA: Cloudy Air Temperature 66 - 76 Water Temperature 60 - 74 YELLOWTAIL - Still only bottom fish near the entrada; maybe as the water warms up they will show. CORVINA – Power plant and bridge were the best bets this week. SNOOK - Chartreuse and white is the best color choice and when coupled with a slow retrieve along the bottom the results can be surprising. HALIBUT - Most of the sandy beaches have a few. SIERRA - Still quiet. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatchmagbay.htm
