Baja Sur

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA - THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA - Sat., July 20, 2002 EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: The dorado (mahi-mahi in Hawaii, dolphinfish in Florida) fishing we are experiencing has been great! Lots of quality fish to 50-pounds. Regardless of the direction you go, the action is not far from the hotels, so you get more fishing time. The tuna bite has been pretty iffy, but close to the beach there are still some huge roosters to take shots at. Dennis O’ Hearn, Newport Beach, Calif., and his gang spent their first day of a three-day trip pounding the beach and weren’t disappointed . . . plenty small roosters, jacks, pompano and pargo. The ESPN Great Outdoor Games Fly Fishing Competition featuring our friend Reel Women’s own Lori-Ann Murphy will air July 20, 4:30-7 p.m. and July 21 at 3 a.m. on ESPN. ESPN2 will feature the competition at 1 a.m., 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on July 31. All times listed are Eastern. Good Luck! Lori-Ann. Tune In and Fish On! (We suggest you check local broadcast times and set your recorders.) Please note that our Baja Fly Fishing Forum has moved to a new address: http://www.bajafly.com/discussion/ AIR & SEA - Some high clouds and light breezes in the p.m. Hi 99° Lo 79° Wind: N /6 mph Humidity: 70% Dewpoint: 69° Visibility: 15 Water Temps 77 - 82 OFFSHORE: The blue marlin count doubled this week and the striped marlin count dropped somewhat. We are also beginning to see an increase in sailfish which should make for an interesting Aug. for the billfish crowd. INSHORE: Cleaner, warmer water must be just what the doctor ordered for the dorado. Poppers and white See Through Deceivers have been the hot ticket this week. BEACH: Plenty of smaller roosters, jacks, pompano and a few pargo keep things interesting. BILLFISH - A couple more degrees and things should get interesting. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Not very consistent, but who cares? Dorado are everywhere. DORADO - Good, and we are not talking about little guys. ROOSTERFISH - Lots of smaller ones from the beach and some toads inshore. JACK CREVALLE - A few large schools close near Punta Arena. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Not much pressure, but they are still around. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock reefs in front of Rancho Leonero and Punta Colorada are the best bet. SIERRA - Punta Colorada bay produced good action this week. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatch.htm MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., July 20, 2002 IN GENERAL: The esteros (estuaries) produced a few leopard grouper, small snook and corvina using a small chartreuse Deep Diver. The best action was centered near Devil’s Curve. AIR & SEA: Clear skies Air Temperature 66 - 76 Water Temperature 60 - 74 YELLOWTAIL – Quiet. CORVINA – Didn’t have to go very far. The bridge at the entrance to town was a good as any. SNOOK - A few smaller ones to 8-pounds. HALIBUT - Plenty of smaller ones near the sandy beach across from San Carlos. SIERRA - Finally a few at Belchers on the current rips. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatchmagbay.htm
