REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA - THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA - Sat., July 27, 2002 EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Hurricanes Douglas and Elida passed well below us and aside from unsettled conditions mid-week had little impact on the East Cape area. The dorado bite continued at a good pace with plenty of quality fish snapping up poppers and See Through Deceivers. Inshore, the roosterfish remained the crowd pleasers with a few pompano mixed in. AIR & SEA - Partly cloudy and light to stiff breezes in the p.m. Hi 101° Lo 79° Wind: NW/14 mph Humidity: 49% Dewpoint: 69° Visibility: 15 Water Temps 77 - 85 . OFFSHORE: Takes a little effort, but it is worth it for both the stripers and blues. We are starting to see an influx of sailfish as would be expected this time of year. . INSHORE: Small roosterfish dominated the catch with a few pompano to round out the count. . BEACH: Still seeing the mullet schools with the best action from La Ribera to Punta Arena where the larger roosters are feeding on the mullet. BILLFISH - Stripers, blues and more sailfish are offering a variety of shots right now. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still disappointing for this time of year. DORADO - Plenty of action to take up the slack for the missing tuna. ROOSTERFISH - Lots of shots. If roosters are your game, now is the time. JACK CREVALLE - Not finding the bigger ones, but plenty of smaller ones to keep busy with. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty, just a few miles off shore. PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few around, but not many anglers focusing on them. SIERRA - Same here almost an incidental catch. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatch.htm MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., July 27, 2002 IN GENERAL: On the outside, the seas were heavy with some 12 to15 foot swells reported from the two hurricanes that passed below Cabo this week. Down below Tasco to above the entrada some 83-degree water was found. Tuna seiners were working the area wrapping large schools of yellowfin tuna to 40 pounds. The entrance to Santa Maria bay produced some yellowtail under the flocks of birds. Inside the bay, there’s still good halibut fishing near the any sandy beach. Up in the esteros, there has been a steady pick on corvina, grouper and a few snook to 10 pounds. AIR & SEA: Partly cloudy with some breeze in the afternoon Air Temperature 69 - 82 Water Temperature 69 - 82 YELLOWTAIL - Santa Maria Bay was the best bet this week. CORVINA - Fair catches through out the bay. SNOOK - Devil's Curve and Mario's Spot seem to be the best producers right now. HALIBUT - Plenty of smaller ones near the sandy beach across from San Carlos. SIERRA - Not enough to make the run all the way to Belchers.
