REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA - THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA - Wed., Aug. 07, 2002 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Bob Hale and his son-in-law Jeff Greenlee, Las Vegas, Nev., spent the last four days racking up good scores of roosters, jacks and pompano with our guide Ed Kunze, who has been helping us out this summer. Most of the action took place close to shore near Punta Colorado. A few miles further offshore they found some good sized dorado as well. AIR & SEA - Tuesday, those thunderheads showed up as usual and then moved directly off the Buena Vista area and dumped the first significant rainfall in many months, over 2 ½ inches. Hi 93° Lo 78° Wind: Calm except during the rainstorm Humidity: 63% Dewpoint: 69° Visibility: 15 Water Temps 77 - 85 . OFFSHORE: Focus now begins to turn to blues and sailfish as the water warms up. The stripes are still here as are the larger variety dorado. There have been some tuna under the porpoise, but it has been a long way out – over 30 miles. . INSHORE: Punta Colorada and Bartle beach were the hot spots this week producing plenty of roosterfish, jack and pompano action. . BEACH: Ladyfish and pompano in addition to a good showing of roosters and jacks. If you don't get a shot at some quality fish you aren't paying attention. BILLFISH - Blues and stripers with a few sailfish mixed in. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Footballs with a few larger ones further outside. DORADO - Found quite a few a few miles off of Punta Colorada. ROOSTERFISH - Take your pick: inshore or beach. JACK CREVALLE - Have been seeing quite a few singles swimming in the seam looking for food. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Still there. PARGO AND CABRILLA - The reef in front of Rancho Leonero is a good bet. SIERRA - A couple caught at Punta Colorada. It included snook, leopard grouper, corvina, pompano, and spotted bay bass. Even better, the catches were spread out and not in just one area. On the outside on a 210 heading 23 to 28 miles out there was a good showing of dorado and the first reports of marlin moving into the area. AIR & SEA: Sunny and hot with light afternoon breezes. Air Temperature 69 - 82 Water Temperature 69 - 82 YELLOWTAIL - The entrance to either bay is the best bet. CORVINA - A fair showing in several different areas. SNOOK - Began to pick up this week, we will see if it continues. HALIBUT - Plenty of smaller ones near the sandy beach across from San Carlos. SIERRA - A few inside of Santa Margarita Island.
