REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: [email protected]; USA toll-free (800) 919-2252; Mexico 011-52-614-14-10373 Wed., Nov. 27, 2002 As we gather family and friends to share a day Thanksgiving, remember to count your blessings. Remember to let those you love know how much you care for them and what a blessing they are to your life. Share the hugs, the pats on the back and hearty handshakes. Make a mental memory of the time going past, for we are here for a fleeting moment in time; it is always the right time to say “I love you,” always the right time to say “thank you,” always the right time to say “I'm sorry,” always the right time to show kindness, always the right time for a prayer of Thanksgiving. -- Gary, Yvonne and Ben EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: The hotels have few guests and the number of boats venturing out are even fewer. The ones that have gone out have done surprisingly well. Catches have included billfish, dorado, tuna and even some amberjack. The North wind backed off for the last few days and the weather has been pleasant. AIR & SEA - Water temperature 81° F / 77° F Air temperature 59-84 Humidity about 56% Wind Calm Conditions Overcast Mostly Cloudy (BKN) : 9000 ft Sunrise 6:39 AM MST Sunset 5:35 PM MST Dec 27 New Dec 4 First Quarter Dec 11 Full Dec 19 Dec 26 Last Quarter · OFFSHORE: Still good fishing with a few billfish and dorado being the best bet. The tuna still are a good 40 miles away and most of the ones being caught are in the football-size class and hardly worth the long ride. · INSHORE: Jacks and roosters provided most of the action this week with a few dorado found near the shark buoys at Punta Pescadero · BEACH: Still some schools of sardina to be found from Rancho Leonero to Punta Colorada. Look for the diving pelicans, which are a good indicator. I promise you the jacks, ladyfish and roosters will be there before you are. BILLFISH - Still a few around. YELLOWFIN TUNA - A few close with the main schools below Las Frailes. DORADO - Best bet is the shark buoys in front of Punta Pescadero. ROOSTERFISH - There continues to be some quality fish near the lighthouse and smaller ones in front of the pangas on the beach at La Ribera. JACK CREVALLE - Smaller variety can be found chasing the sardina near shore. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty of schools sighted from La Ribera to Punta Colorada. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Try any of the rocky points and if the wind is blowing, head up toward Punta Pescadero. You can find a little protection from the wind there. SIERRA - Plenty around the bait receivers in front of La Ribera. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., Nov. 27, 2002 IN GENERAL: There is a huge concentration of bait that has attracted a smorgasbord of sea life including billfish, dorado, wahoo, and tuna. Back closer to the entrada, the dorado can be found chasing bait schools. Out a little further on a 240-degree heading, the wahoo can be found hanging out around the shark buoys. We are down to the wire and still have two rods available on the Dec. 5-13 Marlin 101 trip. Snooze you lose. This will be the last week we can offer our clients a chance to get in on the big bite of 2002. Give Yvonne a call at 800 919 2252. For more information visit us at http://www.bajafly.com/mag_bluewater.htm Still some quality yellowtail down deep at the entrada. Up in the esteros (estuaries), snook, pargo and corvina provided good action. I will be going down for our first mangrove trip of 2003, Jan. 3-7. If you want to join me for a shot at the snook as well as other critters, call Yvonne at 800 919 2252 or visit http://www.bajafly.com/magjantrip.htm Water Temperature 72-79 Air Temperature 66°-75 Humidity 79% Wind Calm Conditions Haze. Sunrise 6:51 AM MST Sunset 5:40 PM MST Last Quarter Nov 27 New Dec 4 First Quarter Dec 11 Full Dec 19 Dec 26 Last Quarter YELLOWTAIL - Best quality fish at the entrada, smaller guys at Punta Hughes. CORVINA - You can find them at the pier, bridge at the entrance to town and up in the esteros. SNOOK - Devil's Curve and Mario's Spot continued to provide the best action. HALIBUT - It's all quite simple: Got Chartreuse Clousers get Halibut. SIERRA - Schools of these toothy critters can be found from Puerto San Carlos to the entrada. ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO Wed., Nov. 27, 2002 IN GENERAL: The moon is going into the dark phase and with the improved water conditions the fishing should bust wide open next week. The 84º blue water has moved to within 10 miles. The large weed areas we had from the heavy runoff out of the rivers have mostly disappeared and the few scattered areas of weeds are concentrating the dorado a lot better. The boats going for sailfish, are getting two to three per day and at least a couple of the 20- to 25-pound dorado. The tuna fishing has gone wide open, but unfortunately there is no size to them. Paul Philips, fishing with Santiago and Adan on the panga Gitana, went 22 miles and found a huge school of fish. The area was acres in size. Hooking a few of the 12- to 15-pound fish, the decision was quickly made to go out to the 55 mile mark. They found another huge area of tuna, but nothing larger than about 60 pounds. They ended the long day with 15 tuna and two sailfish (released). The roosterfish action is still very good with four per boat being the average. The size is very impressive as they are running between 25- and 45-pounds.
