REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: [email protected]; USA toll-free (800) 919-2252; Mexico 011-52-624-14-10373 Wed., March 05, 2003 EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Decisions, decisions, decisions! There are marlin to the south outside of Las Frailes and big dorado to the north outside of Punta Pescadero strung out all the way to Muertos Bay. For the moment, the dorado are the best choice for the fly-rodder with plenty of double digit ones willing to grab the fly. The marlin have continued their unusual strong showing for March and with some patience, many of our clients are adding one to their species list. Back on the road again! Yvonne and I will be on the move beginning today at the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach this afternoon and evening. We will be with our good friends the Valdez family in their Buenavista Beach Resort Hotel booth. Tomorrow (3/6) we drive up to Santa Barbara to do a presentation for the Santa Barbara Fly Fishers and the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Dept. The show, followed by a Q&A session, is at 7 p.m. at the Cabrillo Pavilion, 1118 Cabrillo Blvd. Then, on Fri. (3/7), we will be with John Ireland and the gang from Rancho Leonero in their booth at the Hall Show. Are you still with us? Our last stop will be the Fly-Fishing Show at Ontario on Sat. (3/8). Drop by either of the booths in Long Beach, come to the show in Santa Barbara, stop us in the aisle and say hello, or wave to us on the Freeway. BILLFISH - Feb. bonanza keeps on rocking right into March. YELLOWFIN TUNA – With dorado and marlin all over, who cares? DORADO - I even heard of some outside the mooring buoys at Palmas the other day. Keep this up and someone will get one from the beach. ROOSTERFISH - Smaller fish showing up on the bait schools. JACK CREVALLE - Plenty of smaller ones. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - No one is even looking with all the other action going on. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock structure at sun down, not bad. SIERRA - Early bird gets the worm . . . no, its sierra. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., March 05, 2003 IN GENERAL: Up in the esteros toward Lopez Mateos, the jacks broke wide open with double digit scores being common. Added to that were a few nice-sized corvina to fill in the gaps and even two nice sized pargo. Out at Punta Belcher, spotted bay bass dominated the catch with some grandes up to three pounds. The Magdalena Bay version of the giant halibut bite continued this week with one 10-kilo critter being reported on the north side of Punta Belcher. If that’s not enough, a large school of dorado was spotted less than a quarter of a mile outside the entrada. Water Temperature 65-70 Air Temperature 60-°71° Humidity 89% Wind Calm Conditions Foggy in the morning and then burning off mid morning Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:43 a.m. MST Sunset 6:30 p.m. MST Mar. 11 First Quarter Mar. 18 Full Mar. 24 Last Quarter Apr. 1 New YELLOWTAIL - Look out in front of the entradas (entrances) at both Santa Maria Bay and Magdalena Bay. CORVINA - Got back up to speed this week. SNOOK - Nope, not a one. HALIBUT – 10-kilos! They are getting bigger! SIERRA - Took the week off.
