Baja Sur

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: [email protected]; USA toll-free (800) 919-2252; Mexico 011-52-624-14-10373 Sat., March 08, 2003 EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Earlier in the week the John Gallo group had fair-to-good action on good-sized dorado up toward Punta Pescadero. Marlin are still being found throughout Palmas Bay with the best action down to the south off of Cabo Pulmo and Las Frailes. Back inshore, the sierra dominated the catch with a few roosters and jacks showing up as well. The Fred Hall Show in Long Beach and a program for the Santa Barbara Fly Fishers are history for us. At the Hall Show, we had the opportunity to see lots of old friends and make some new ones. Lots of new things happening for Baja on the Fly including new destinations, more writing assignments and club presentations which we will fill you in on later. At Santa Barbara, we had a great time with the Santa Barbara Fly Fishers and we can’t thank Mike Moropolis enough for arranging the whole program for us. This morning we are headed for our last stop at the Fly-Fishing Show at Ontario (Calif.) and then back to Escondido to sort out everything that was accomplished this week on the road. AIR & SEA - Water temperature 72-77 Air temperature 59°-81° Humidity about 73% Wind Calm Conditions Clear Visibility 15 miles Sunrise 6:31 a.m. MST Sunset 6:24 p.m. MST Mar. 11 First Quarter Mar. 18 Full Mar. 24 Last Quarter Apr. 1 New · OFFSHORE: Dorado first and marlin second which is great for March. · INSHORE: Early morning for sierra is the best bet. · BEACH: Wind waves for the last few days really chopped up the beach. We hope things will calm down this week. BILLFISH - Plenty of buzz with many boats sporting more than one release flag. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still pretty quiet for us. DORADO - I don't know where they came from, but who cares. It has been a hoot for the last month. ROOSTERFISH - Smaller fish only mean the bigger ones are on their way. JACK CREVALLE - Plenty of smaller ones. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - No one is even looking with all the other action going on. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock structure at sun down, not bad. SIERRA - Early bird gets the worm . . . no, its sierra. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., March 08, 2003 IN GENERAL: The halibut bite continues out on the north side of Punta Belcher. Plenty of spotted bay bass strung out along the rock structure from Punta Belcher to the entrada. Up at Devil’s Curve the jacks went wild this week and mixed in were a few snapper and grouper. The corvina has also reappeared after a couple of week's absence. The dorado found earlier in the week at the entrada seem to have moved a little further out. Water Temperature 65-70 Air Temperature 60-°73° Humidity 89% Wind WNW at 4 mph Conditions some wind in the afternoon Visibility 6 miles Sunrise 6:40 a.m. MST Sunset 6:31 p.m. MST Mar. 11 First Quarter Mar. 18 Full Mar. 24 Last Quarter Apr. 1 New YELLOWTAIL - Pretty scarce this week. Best possibility would be near the entrada under the bird schools. CORVINA - Got back up to speed this week. SNOOK - Still pretty slim. HALIBUT - 10-kilos! They are getting bigger! SIERRA - Took the week off. ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO Sat., March 08, 2003 IN GENERAL: The fishing for most species has still not picked up yet. The cooler water inshore has pushed the fish out to about the 35-mile mark. A few very decent catches were recorded this week, including a 650-pound black marlin which was caught by Captain Arturo on the panga “Whisky III.” Another nice catch was on the “Don Gordo” with Captain Poli. I was along that day and fishing with client Neil Johnson of Minnesota. Slow trolling live green jacks and mackerel, we got three roosterfish of 42, 45, and 52 pounds. All the fish were taken at the White Rocks. Captain Adolpho, fishing with client Chris Cauble on the “Dos Hermanos,” reported lots of large jack crevalle at the Petatlan area. They got 10 of the hard fighting fish, weighing between 15- and 25-pounds.
