REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: [email protected]; USA toll-free (800) 919-2252; Mexico 011-52-624-14-10373 Wed., March 12, 2003 EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Dorado, tuna and marlin continue to make this what may be one of the best winter bites in quite a while. El Nino? Who knows? Who cares? The water is definitely warmer, earlier. We are not talking rat dorado, either. Some of these critters are tipping the scale at 25-pounds-plus and look like some kind of psychedelic vacuum cleaners as they sweep in behind the boat eating sardina. And, oh yes, they are even being suckered into eating a hook with only fur and feathers on it. Back inshore, the sierra are also getting pretty stupid, regularly taking flies from both the beach and from boats fishing close to shore. One more thing, the ladyfish bite both early and late has been spectacular. Cast a Clouser; let it sink, wham and you come tight to a fish with the attitude of a small tarpon. Huntington Harbor Rod and Reel Club here we come. Our good friend and client Bob Mandic invited Yvonne and I up to talk about one of our favorite subjects, "Marlin Fishing.” If you are in the neighborhood stop by and say hello. The meeting is at the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club, 3821 Warner Ave. at 6 p.m. tonight (3/12). Dorado, marlin and if you’re lucky, some sashimi at cocktail hour. · INSHORE: I hear the roosters out at the lighthouse have big shoulders and attitudes to match. · BEACH: Welcome ladies, do you wanna dance? BILLFISH - Pretty early and hungry after their trip. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Find the right porpoise schools and look out. DORADO - Look out, here they come and hide the 8-weights these are the 12-weight Variety. ROOSTERFISH - If you have the patience you may get a shot at a career rooster! JACK CREVALLE - Plenty of smaller ones. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Not exactly the first choice right now. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock structure at sun down, not bad. SIERRA - Our guides Jeff DeBrown and Jeff Solis whacked them Tues. (3/11) from the beach. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., March 12, 2003 IN GENERAL: Zack Thomas, The SD Log’s “Fishrap” editor, called me about fishing in Magdalena Bay a few weeks ago. I set him up with our Numero Uno guide Enrique Soto and sure enough he caught a 12 kilo snook at one of our secret spots on Tues. (3/11) I can't wait to see the photos. That wasn't all he caught. Palometa amarillo, corvina and halibut rounded out the day’s catch. That was so easy, I understand he is headed out to the entrada to see if he can put the hurt on some of the quality grouper that have been biting this week. Who knows, with his luck he may find a few yellowtail as well. Water Temperature 65-70 Air Temperature 60-°73° Humidity 80% Wind North at 2 mph Conditions Foggy early and some wind after 1:00 in the afternoon Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:36 a.m. MST Sunset 6:33 p.m. MST Mar. 18 Full Mar. 24 Last Quarter Apr. 1 New Apr.9 First Quarter YELLOWTAIL - Best possibility would be near the entrada under the bird schools. CORVINA - They are back! SNOOK - Right place, right time, right fish, fish of a lifetime. HALIBUT - Not Alaska-sized, but big enough to have the locals buzzing. SIERRA - Spread out throughout the open bay. International Game Fish Association needs your support.
