One thing worse is when you know the fish are out there and hungry, but the wind won't quit long enough for you to get to them. That's this week in a nutshell. Dr. John Delashaw and his lovely wife Fran had a last minute cancellation of a planned trip to the Orient and decided to visit East Cape for the first time to get away from the rain in West Linn, Ore. Even with less than ideal conditions, (read north wind every day to 30-knots) Johnny and Fran managed to get at least a half-day every day. Fran not only caught her first dorado ever, but her first saltwater fish ever on pink deceiver. Dr. John, not to be outdone, fooled his first jack, a hefty 18-pounder that gave him a lesson in Toro 101 (the harder you pull, the harder they pull) on a blue and white Sea Habit. Our clients’ persistence paid off and they had dorado action every day. · INSHORE: The action we had seen last week at the lighthouse dried up this week and action picked up back towards La Ribera. · BEACH: Forget it until the wind backs off (which it did today, 4/9). Later in the week should see the action pick back up. BILLFISH - Few boats, little action. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still there, just tough to find in rough conditions. DORADO - No schools, mostly ones and twos. ROOSTERFISH - The larger ones are below the lighthouse between Rincon and Las Barracas. JACK CREVALLE - The bigger ones are here already. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Slow going this week PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few here and there if you pound the rocky points with a Clouser. SIERRA - Even the guides got cherry picked by the toothy ones. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., April 09, 2003 IN GENERAL: The albacore saga continues with a few schools of smaller longfin being reported below Pt. Tasco by yachts making their way back to California. From the Thetis on up the ridge there have also been some yellowfin in the 30- to 60- pound class being caught. Inside the bay, the water has cooled off and there has been little action at the entrada. There are halibut at Punta Belcher and maybe a few sierra under the bird schools. In the esteros, the old standby Devil’s Curve produced little action this week with only a few spotted bay bass. Los Barriles Estero yielded a 16- pound snook for one client who was grinning from ear to ear when he returned to the launch ramp. SIERRA - Look for the sardine schools with birds above them.
