REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: [email protected]; USA toll-free (800) 919-2252; Mexico 011-52-624-14-10373 Sat., April 12, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (4/9-4/11) EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Wow, what a difference a few days make. There’s little wind, calm seas and those fish we knew were out there are now biting like a bear coming out of hibernation. Marlin, dorado, tuna on the outside and the roosters and jacks close to shore have everyone reaching for their flyrod. Togo Hazard, retired contractor from San Diego, is not a fly-fisher, but told me last night the tuna were so thick around his boat "Dusty B" at one point during the day on Thurs. that it would have been perfect for our clients. Every boat that I saw racing in yesterday had so many flags flying that I thought there must be some kind of celebration going on. AIR & SEA - Water temperature 68-74 Air temperature 67.5°-82° Humidity about 57% Wind Calm Conditions Clear Visibility 12 miles Sunrise 5:57 a.m. MST Sunset 6:37 p.m. MST Today First Quarter Apr.16 Full Apr. 23 Last Quarter May 1 New May 9 First Quarter · OFFSHORE: Flat seas, hungry fish. What a combination! · INSHORE: Dorado, jacks, roosters and even the pesky sierra all rose to the occasion. · BEACH: Mike Klingler, San Bruno, Calif., on a family outing, has devoted most of his fishing time squeezed in between twin baby girl maintenance (seven months) to fishing from the beach on foot near Buenavista Beach Hotel. He has racked up five different species including several roosters including one 15-pounder. As the sun set behind the mountains he was cheered on by a large group of revelers celebrating a wedding on the beach. BILLFISH - Few boats, plenty of action. Several boats were sporting more than one flag. YELLOWFIN TUNA - All you want with mostly smaller ones to 35-pounds with a few larger ones for the masochist. DORADO - All the ones yesterday were 20-pounds and up. ROOSTERFISH - Rooster Alley and Bartle Beach had some that were chasing two-pound mullet all the way up on the beach. JACK CREVALLE - Take your pick from a few pounds to “no way, Jose.” BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Slow going this week PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few here and there if you pound the rocky points with a Clouser. SIERRA - Saw a school crashing on sardina at Bartle Beach early in the morning. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., April 12, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (4/9-4/11) IN GENERAL: The albacore saga continues with a few schools of smaller longfin being reported below Pt. Tasco by yachts making their way back to California. From the Thetis on up the ridge there have also been some yellowfin in the 30- to 60- pound class being caught. Inside the bay, the water warmed back up a bit and the esteros continued to produce some fair to good action on snook. It is not a slam dunk, but if you put in your time you might get lucky. Water Temperature 64-68 Air Temperature 61-°80° Humidity 91% Wind NW at 2 mph Conditions Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:04 a.m. MST Sunset 6:46 p.m. MST Today First Quarter Apr.16 Full Apr. 23 Last Quarter May 1 New May 9 First Quarter YELLOWTAIL - Cooler water slowed that action down. CORVINA - Pier and power plant best bet. SNOOK - Slow but steady. HALIBUT - Try any of the sandy beaches with a chartreuse Clouser. SIERRA - Look for the sardine schools with birds above them. ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO Please note the date. We are only providing weekly (not twice-a-week) reports for this area. Sat., April 12, 2003 Report covers the period Sat.-Fri. (4/5-4/11) IN GENERAL: The 78º blue water is at the entrance to Zihuatanejo Bay. The blue water close to shore has really turned on the inshore fishing for sierras, rainbow runners, large jack crevalle, and a few roosterfish. Even a decent 30-pound wahoo was recorded on the “Agua Azul” by Captain Mecate at the Solitary Rock, just ½-mile from the bay entrance. The main action is taking place at 16-miles on a 240º heading. The tuna schools are traveling fast, pop up and then disappear. But, the sailfish bite has been fairly constant. Santiago on the panga “Gitana” and Efrain on the “Vamonos III” both had back to back days with at least 9 sailfish strikes each day. The fish have been a little wary to hook however, and fishing with conventional gear, they got 4 each day.
