REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: [email protected]; USA toll-free (800) 919-2252; Mexico 011-52-624-14-10373 Wed., April 23, 2003 Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (4/19-4/22) EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Tuna and choppy seas dominated the reports this week. Most of the tuna were of the smaller variety, up to 35-pounds. Dorado continued to be found in small groups throughout Las Palmas Bay. There were a few other species found this week including a wahoo or two, one sailfish and few yellowtail down deep. The roosters were still cavorting close to shore, but wind and long casts don’t mix well. Yesterday (4/22) the wind did back off and we are hoping for calmer seas to end April. There were a few dorado as well and a fair billfish count. · INSHORE: Down past the lighthouse hiding from the wind were both plenty of boats and a good show of larger roosters. · BEACH: Barely fishable, but improving. BILLFISH - Sailfish already? YELLOWFIN TUNA - Best with the porpoise schools. DORADO - Mostly the big ones, but not schooled up yet. ROOSTERFISH - As soon as the wind shuts off it could take off like a rocket. JACK CREVALLE - Everything from really small to really large. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Slow going this week. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Quiet this week. SIERRA - Punta Colorada or La Ribera around the bait receivers. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., April 23, 2003 Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (4/19-4/22) IN GENERAL: Cold and windy are not my favorite words to begin a report, but that's the fact. The good news is May is coming and it will warm up. In re-reading what I just wrote, I realized that our “cold and windy” might be your warm and balmy, so on with the report: Grande halibut again this week; and that is a relative term as well but, a 15-pound halibut in Baja is large. Offshore, the seas were rough and the locals stayed close to home. Up in the esteros there were a few corvina, grouper and maybe a snook if you worked hard. Water Temperature 60-67 Air Temperature 54°-76° Humidity 70% Wind NNW at 4 mph Conditions Mostly Cloudy Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 5:54 a.m. MDST Sunset 6:51 p.m. MDST Apr. 23 Last Quarter May 1 New May 9 First Quarter May15 Full May 22 Last Quarter YELLOWTAIL - Rumors of plenty on the Thetis, but with rough weather it is tough to get a confirmation CORVINA - Pier and power plant best bet. SNOOK - Work the deep holes near Devil’s Curve HALIBUT - Try any of the sandy beaches with a chartreuse Clouser. SIERRA – Slow.
