(5/21-5/23) EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: I returned to East Cape from Magdalena Bay and found overall the bite had tapered off from last week. Tuna and dorado were both spotty. There are plenty of billfish being seen, but not biting very well. Wind has been out of the south in the afternoons. AIR & SEA - Water temperature 72-78 Air temperature 75°-84° Humidity about 40% Wind West at 6 mph Conditions Clear Visibility 8 miles Sunrise 6:34 a.m. MST Sunset 7:57p.m. MST May 30 New June 7 First Quarter June 14 Full June 21 Last Quarter · OFFSHORE: Everyone reports lots of fish being seen, but the problem is they are not biting very well. · INSHORE: The bigger roosters haven't heard the news and continue to put on a pretty good show along with the jacks. · BEACH: Near perfect conditions except for some wind earlier in the week midday. BILLFISH - They are here if we could only get them to bite a little better. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Find the right porpoise school and you have great action on football-sized tuna. DORADO - Mostly singles this week. ROOSTERFISH - Wind made it tough in the afternoon at the lighthouse, midweek. JACK CREVALLE - A few sluggos seen, but for some reason tough to get them to bite. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Good show just a few miles from the hotels. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rocky points and reefs the best bet. SIERRA – You’ll find them beneath the bait receivers at La Ribera and Punta Colorada. Wire shock tippets, please! MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., May 24, 2003. Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (5/21-5/23) IN GENERAL: Sounds like the commercial fisherman are scooping ‘em up in the surf on the east side of Santa Maria Bay reportedly some snook to 50-pounds. What a shame! Those fish are way too valuable a resource to catch only once, additionally, they are the brood stock. Devil's Curve produced good catches of corvina and a few smaller snook. CORVINA - Silver and white did the trick. SNOOK - Every once in awhile we catch one that the nets missed! HALIBUT - We even caught a few up in the esteros. SIERRA - Quiet for now. (5/21-5/23) IN GENERAL: The fishing could only be rated as outstanding. The roosterfish are in the surf, the big jack crevalle are everywhere on the inshore waters, school-size tuna are providing great action on light tackle, and the sailfish are acting like tuna. The 80º blue water is just off the beach and the best areas are only 6- to 10-miles offshore. The only unfortunate thing is there are very few people here to take advantage of the good fishing. A couple of very satisfied anglers are David Padgit and Chuck Thompson from Oklahoma City. They fished with Efrin on the “Vamonos III” for three days. The first day was inshore and they released 30 jack crevalle between 15- and 25-pounds. The second day produced double digits on sailfish as they caught and released 10 on 16 strikes. The last day saw 6 sails released on 12 strikes. Baja on the Fly clients Greg Wenning and Barbara Eachus of Pittsburgh, Penn., fished one day with Ruben on the “Vamonos I” caught and released 7 sailfish on 12 strikes. They also got 4 school-sized yellowfin tuna. Greg told me his goal was to get one sailfish each, and he is now spoiled. I should say!
