REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: [email protected]; USA toll-free (800) 919-2252; Mexico 011-52-624-14-10373 Wed., July 09, 2003 Report covers the period Sat.-Tue. (7/05-7/08) EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Where did everybody go? With the holiday over, the crowds thinned out and all that is left are some hungry fish. The tuna are just like that battery-driven bunny and just keep going and going. For you billfish lovers, the sailfish count began to spike upwards along with the stripey count. Find the right group and it could be a multiple hookup fire drill. Speaking of fire drills, Ed Johnson, New York City along with guide Jeff DeBrown, hit the beach at "zero dark hundred" the other morning to beat the heat and get in on the gray light bite. Plenty of ladyfish and pompano got things going and then a blind strike from a jack that looked more like its namesake the Toro grabbed Ed's fly. As the sun got higher the sight casting ops were fast and furious, Ed had one take that he missed on the strip set. All of this was enough to convince him that he needed another day's action to try to get it right on the big guys. Here at Magdalena everyone is at the starting line waiting for the summer bite to take off and it sure seems like it has been slow getting started this year. The boats are averaging three to four sailfish a day, but there are few people here to take advantage of it. We are only averaging about 10 boat charters a day. The inshore action is outstanding also. Fly-fishing clients Scott and Todd Hood from Salt Lake City fished with Adolpho me on the "Dos Hermanos" one day. They got three roosterfish, several jack crevalle and several black skipjack tuna.
