REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: [email protected]; USA toll-free (800) 919-2252; Mexico 011-52-624-14-10373 Sat., July 12, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (7/09-7/11) EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: When we last left New Yorker Ed Johnson on Wed. (7/9) he was still talking about the big one that got away. He decided to add a couple more fishing days to his trip to see if he could add a few species to his list. Well, he succeeded! On the beach he got to the sticks early and never left and by the end of the day had caught ladyfish, gaff sail pompano, halibut, bonefish (small) and a nice rooster that fell just short of Bubba category. On a super panga on Thurs. he landed a 50-pound dorado along with . . . .you guessed it, nine tuna. AIR & SEA - Water temperature 76°-83° Air temperature 79°-93° Humidity about 55% Wind NE at 6 mph Conditions Clouds Partly Cloudy, (FEW) : 12,000 ft Visibility 12 miles Sunrise 6:40 a.m. MST Sunset 8:08 p.m. MST June 13 Full July 21 Last Quarter July 29 New Aug. 5 First Quarter · OFFSHORE: Gene Kira talks about the billfish pileup that occurs in June in his popular book "Baja Catch,” well it’s no longer June, but this was “pile up week.” · INSHORE: More sardina beginning to show and you know what that means. · BEACH: Our clients went to the sticks early morning and never left it, plenty of bait to attract enough different kinds of fish that Jeff DeBrown our guide couldn't even remember all the species his client caught the last trip. BILLFISH – 12-or 14-weight outfits for sails or stripes all within a few miles of shore. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Talk about a spread of fish from 8 miles to 50! DORADO – 12-weight time with the bigger fish hanging around. ROOSTERFISH - Super panga or beach. Your choice JACK CREVALLE - Both greens (smaller) or jack crevalle (bigger). BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty around. PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few in the mid-teens. SIERRA - Decided to spend the summer with us along with their cousins the bigger wahoo. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., July 12, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (7/09-7/11) IN GENERAL: Esteros are the best bet. There is some action at the Entrada but hardly worth the hours ride to get there and if the wind blows it can be a bumpy ride home. Devil’s curve is producing the usual fare with corvina topping the list. Water Temperature 67°-73° Air Temperature 71°-80° Humidity 84% Wind NW at 6 mph Conditions Partly Cloudy Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:44 a.m. MDST Sunset 8:19 p.m. MDST July 13 Full July 21 Last Quarter July 29 New Aug. 5 First Quarter YELLOWTAIL - Watch for the bird schools. CORVINA - Pier, bridge, Power plant and Devil’s Curve all producing good action with a few five pounders mixed in. SNOOK - We just keep waiting for it to break open. HALIBUT - Chartreuse Clousers retrieved slowly along a sandy bottom should produce some action. SIERRA - Quiet for now. ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO Please note the date. We are only providing weekly (not twice a week) reports for this area. Sat., July 12, 2003 Report covers the period Sun.-Fri. (7/05-7/11) IN GENERAL: The blue water is only a mile off the beach, the seas are very calm, and we are averaging about 3 sailfish per boat/day. Inshore, the water has cleaned up from the hard rains we had a couple of weeks ago and the roosterfish action and jack crevalle fishing isoutstanding. There are very few anglers here and we are only putting about 10 boats a day on the water.
