Baja Sur

Fresh Fish Smorgasbord EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., July 14, 2001 TEMPERATURES: High of 96 with a low of 77. Light wind in the afternoon. STRIPED MARLIN - More sailfish than marlin. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Best bet seems to be Cerralvo Island. DORADO - Mostly in open water outside of Punta Pescadero with a few being found early morning around the shark buoys. ROOSTERFISH - Good inshore action early morning and mid-afternoon. JACK CREVALLE - No large ones reported this week. BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Still a few in front of La Ribera. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Reef in front of Hotel Rancho Leonero producing excellent catches. Also some larger ones seen below Rincon. .. OFFSHORE: A few blue marlin, striped marlin, and sails in the canyon between La Ribera and Punta Colorada as well as up near the 88. Spotty dorado and tuna in open water. .. INSHORE: Great action in front of the hotels in the afternoon. Mostly roosters, pargo and a few African pompano. .. BEACH: Slower this week with less sardinia showing. Lots of mullet up and down the beach which will attract the larger roosters. .. QUICK COMMENT - Nice going to Craig Hueners, San Diego, who caught an estimated 35 pound dorado near one of the shark buoys in front of Punta Pescadero. One of Mike Robrhan's red deceivers did the trick. The good rooster bite in front of the hotels just keeps going. Summer weather is here. MARLIN - Several marlin spotted, with one reported caught by a passing yacht. DORADO - As the water warms up, the fish are starting to come into the area; several reported caught this week. TUNA - Few reported. YELLOWTAIL - Good catches reported under the kelp paddies. CORVINA - The bite continues at a good pace. SNOOK - Good catches continue in some of the esteros at Almejas Bay. HALIBUT - No one we know of targeted them this week. .. QUICK COMMENT - This is the time of year when the focus begins to change to offshore. Marlin, dorado, yellowtail have begun their annual migration into the area. It will begin to get even better as the water continues to warm up. Back in the esteros, the fishing has been consistently good for snook, grouper, pargo and corvina. This is a great time to explore for those deep channels where the fish like to hang out waiting for the tidal currents to bring them a free meal.
