Beach Looks Like a Hen House With all the Roosters EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., August 01, 2001 TEMPERATURES: High of 91 with a low of 72. Strong wind yesterday afternoon with overcast skies. STRIPED MARLIN - Off of Punta Pescadero produced a few. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Below and outside of Las Frailes produced a few whoppers under the porpoise. DORADO - Mainly larger fish in open water. Not much action under the shark buoys. ROOSTERFISH -Still good inshore action early morning and mid-afternoon in front of La Ribera and Rancho Leonero. JACK CREVALLE - The bigger fish are seen close to the beach at Punta Arena. BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few in front of La Ribera. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Heard reports of a few larger ones up near Isla Cerralvo. .. OFFSHORE: Several blues over 300 were caught this week. Naturally, they were landed after the Bisbee Tournament. Some tuna to 150 pounds rounded out the action offshore. .. INSHORE: Roosterfish, jacks and sierra provided good action for those who elected to stay close to shore and take advantage of the bite. .. BEACH: Seems like you can walk down on almost any beach and have some good action catching fish to 10 pounds. .. QUICK COMMENT - It is beginning to sound like a broken record, but the beach is pretty spectacular in my opinion. Guide Chris Sorenson and I have had a few days between clients and both of us have been scoring on multiple roosters to 15 pounds early morning. This morning I had four before 8 a.m., all on a See-Through Deceiver. Chris lost the largest he has ever hooked and estimated it to be well over 30 pounds. MARLIN - More coming into the area every week. DORADO - They are in the same area as the marlin. TUNA - Still little to report. YELLOWTAIL - No one really targeting them right now. CORVINA - Consistently good throughout the bay. SNOOK - Fair to good in most of the stock spots. HALIBUT - Out near the entrada there seems to be a concentration feeding on red crab. .. QUICK COMMENT – Aha! An orange shrimp Clouser did the trick with the halibut at the entrada. In the esteros, the tried-and-true chartreuse Clouser continued to produce the best action on a variety of species including snook, corvina and broomtail grouper.
