Baja Sur

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., Aug. 08, 2001 TEMPERATURES: High of 92 with a low of 80. Some wind in the afternoon. STRIPED MARLIN - Slow action this week. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Below and outside of Punta Colorada produced the best action under the porpoise. DORADO A few larger fish found under the shark buoys. ROOSTERFISH -Best early morning and mid afternoon in front of La Ribera. JACK CREVALLE - Mostly smaller fish this week. BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Slow. PARGO AND CABRILLA - No one targeted them this week. .. OFFSHORE: The best word to describe the last few days is “slow.” There was good tuna action one day, but the next day no one could find them. .. INSHORE: Roosterfish, jacks and sierra were the best bet for the inshore crowd. .. BEACH: La Ribera is best bet right now for roosters and sierra. .. QUICK COMMENT - The Grunke group from Arizona had fair fishing offshore A few tuna to 60 pounds, one large dorado and a striped marlin was their catch for the week. Be sure to see our Catch of the Week. The photo is one of my best and is with my latest digital camera with a special housing that allows me to shoot underwater. http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatch.html MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., Aug. 08, 2001 Temperatures: 86-degree high; low 73. Partly cloudy with wind in the afternoon. MARLIN - Best area seems to be out toward the Thetis Bank. DORADO - 240 degrees 25 miles under the shark buoys is the best bet. TUNA - No action reported. YELLOWTAIL - If you are willing to make the trip, the Thetis Bank is the best Shot. CORVINA - Fair catches near the bridge and Power Plant. SNOOK - Devils Curve provided good action on Mon. HALIBUT - Try near Punta Belcher. .. QUICK COMMENT – Well, it is done and is at the printers. My new book should be available in early Sept. It’s called Gary Graham's No Nonsense Guide to Fly Fishing Magdalena Bay. Word of a giant fish paradise on Southern Baja's sparsely inhabited Pacific side has been seeping out for years. Now, guide and excursion leader Gary Graham (Baja On the Fly) lays out the truth -- and is it ever fascinating. Magdalena Bay is wide open for fly-fishing for highly prized snook in mangrove-lined estuaries to offshore marlin; plus observing gray whales from Alaska calving, exotic birds, kayaking, and even surfing. Fish, explore and photograph the real West Coast of Baja California Sur before the inevitable tourism and resorts take their toll. With photos, illustrations, maps, Spanish phrases, fly-fishing terms, travel and fishing information, this is the Bible for this unique region.
