EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., Sept. 12, 2001 .. IN GENERAL: Billfish action has improved a little compared to last week with a few more blues reported either hooked or caught. Most of the action for tuna and dorado has been further down the coast below Las Frailes. Here is a recent beach report from one of our clients: “I wanted to let you know I stayed at Los Palmas hotel for a day on my way back from Las Arenas – I had spoken to you on the phone and via email prior to my trip and your suggestions were very useful. I ended up fishing right in front of my hotel with a 9-weight and Teeny 350 line rigged with a 'Spanish Fly' pattern about 3-4 inches long (deceiver-like pattern tied on rear on hook shank), I was ecstatic to catch several roosters in front of the hotel . . . with the largest two being 5-6 lbs. I tried other fly patterns, but this one seemed to produce best. My fishing partner also had all his strikes on this fly. Maybe the long hook shank mimicked the ballyhoo the fish were feeding on? There was also a larger 'mullet-like’ (silver, with black tail about 10 inches) that fish seemed to be feeding on, although I did not have a fly that size to throw. The afternoons were super windy and made fishing more difficult, with the surf picking up made for very difficult fishing, I didn't see any breaking fish at the time, either. In any case, looking forward to returning to Los Barriles.” Signed/ Mark Saba .. OFFSHORE: With slow going most of the offshore fleet took advantage of the good dorado and tuna action nearer shore. .. INSHORE: The best action for dorado was down below Las Frailes with a few tuna mixed in as well. .. BEACH: Early morning produced the best results. Late afternoon winds hampered the evening bite. TEMPERATURES: High of 89 – low 77. High clouds wind in the afternoon. BILLFISH - A few more blues reported; very few stripes and sails. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Best action further down the coast. DORADO - Good fishing down below Las Frailes ROOSTERFISH - Best action is early morning in front of the hotels. Fair action when the boats return in the p.m. and empty their bait tanks. Roosterfish always love a free meal. JACK CREVALLE - Not much action this week, no one targeted them. BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few scattered throughout Las Palmas Bay. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Fair catches over the reef in front of Rancho Leonero. .. QUICK COMMENT - While I realize this is just a semi-weekly fish report, I can't ignore yesterday’s tragic events. IN GENERAL: Best reports continue to come from the Thetis Bank where they’ re finding tuna, yellowtail, dorado and a few marlin. Back in Santa Maria Bay, our friend Brian Freitag at Mag Bay Tours, http://www.magbaytours.com reported good fishing on the pinnacles for grouper and white sea bass to 45 pounds. Temperatures: 89-degree high; low 75. Windy in the afternoons and some high clouds. MARLIN - Best reports coming from the Thetis Bank area. DORADO - Thetis bank or the shark buoys providing the best action. TUNA - Seem to be hanging out around the high spots. YELLOWTAIL - A few at the entrada (entrance) with better reports from the Thetis Bank area. CORVINA - None reported this week. SNOOK - No one targeted them this week. SIERRA - Little action this week. PARGO & GROUPER - Good catches near rocks at Punta Redonda. .. QUICK COMMENT - There was little activity in the esteros (estuaries) this week. Most of the reports received were concerning the waters outside the bay.
