EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., Oct. 13, 2001 Sea Temperature: 80-84. Air Temperature: 87 high to 69 low. .. IN GENERAL - As anticipated, the dorado and tuna fishing has been great. Even the billfish have decided to begin to play after the storm. Most of the boats are focusing on the dorado and tuna with several areas producing good catches. Cabo Pulmo and La Ribera have been consistent for dorado and a few smaller tuna. Outside, under the porpoise, the tuna have been larger with a few up to 60 pounds. I was fishing near Cabo Pulmo and looked out to sea and spotted the "Mary Lee", the boat we use for Flyrod Marlin 101, heading up to Magdalena Bay to begin our trips the first of November. I talked to John Barnes the skipper and he assured me everything was ready and he was going to be out doing some scouting before the first group and I arrived to begin fishing on the 1st. OFFSHORE: Dorado and tuna are the best we have seen this summer and the billfish seem to be heating up as well. .. INSHORE: Yuk! Dirty water with lots of debris has slowed the inshore down to a standstill. .. BEACH: The best action is north of Los Barriles, but it is an on-again off-again proposition. John Lopez, visiting us from Albuquerque, New Mexico, did manage to land a nice rooster this morning from the beach, which is a first in the past few days. BILLFISH - Starting to pick up. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Good catches from footballs to the grandes. DORADO - Best we have had this summer and early fall. We see no reason for it to stop. ROOSTERFISH - Water has to clear up some. JACK CREVALLE - Again, dirty water slowed things down a lot. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty along the trash line a few miles offshore. PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few of the reefs holding fish, but it's difficult to predict. Fall and winter season is beginning and the reports are starting to trickle in. There's wahoo on the double 23's, lots of football tuna around the Thetis and a few dorado under the buoys. A few marlin are being seen here and there but, no herds yet. Temperatures: 78 during the day, 71 at night. MARLIN - A few fish spotted by yachts traveling down the coast. DORADO - Shark buoys still the best bet. TUNA - One long range boat reported excellent catches a few miles above the Thetis Bank. YELLOWTAIL - Little to talk about. CORVINA - A few near the bridge at the entrance to town. SNOOK - Not a bonanza, but a few quality fish are showing up. SIERRA - No report.
