EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., Oct. 24, 2001 Sea Temperature: 80-84. Air Temperature: 88 high to 72 low. .. IN GENERAL - Hard to believe there is only one week left in October. The beach fishing has held up very well with double digit catches of jacks, roosters, skipjack and other in-shore species. Terrie Yamagishi (editor of Fly Fisherman Japan magazine) and Steen Larsen had a great week honing their skills both on-shore and from a panga. Steen had a pink and white salmon fly that was a killer from the beach. They had plenty of shots at larger dorado as well as a few sailfish, but discovered why we always recommend a tandem hook on the larger flies. They missed several opportunities when the fish came in and short-bit the fly, missing the front hook entirely. .. OFFSHORE: Sailfish began to show up again this week and added to the still good action for dorado and tuna. .. INSHORE: Water clarity is improving every day and roosters, jacks, sierra, skipjack and a few dorado have kept the panga fleet busy. .. BEACH: Lance Peterson, Chimicum, Wash., arrived last week to help out guiding our clients and reported that the beach was as good as he had ever seen it. After guiding for the last six days he was going out this morning for a "busman's holiday" to see what he could come up with for himself. BILLFISH - A few blues and stripes, but the sailfish were the most prevalent. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Smaller ones at Cabo Pulmo and La Ribera. The larger variety under the porpoise schools. DORADO - Continued good action around almost anything floating. ROOSTERFISH - Mostly smaller fish. but plenty of them. JACK CREVALLE - Same story: smaller fish with a few larger guys in the mid-teens. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - I can't remember a time when we have caught as many from the beach. Usually they are a one shot deal, but it has held up for almost two weeks on the beaches above Los Barriles. PARGO AND CABRILLA - If you put your time in on one of the rock reefs or points you will come up with some quality fish. IN GENERAL: Magdalena Bay in the fall! What can I say? I have been in Escondido picking up some last minute items for our Flyrod Marlin Series that begins next week and reports by telephone and email have been rolling in. A consistent report of wahoo to 90 pounds gets my heart pumping. In the last several years we have only seen a few. Lots of dorado and tuna and more marlin being sighted each day makes me feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. I will drive back down with Dave Hill, who will be handling the guiding duties at East Cape while I am on the Mary Lee. Up in the esteros (estuaries), the reports this week have been equally as good. Snook, grouper and pargo provided great action for the few anglers. The best action was up in the vicinity of Devil's Curve. Just outside the entrada (entrance) several boats reported lots of dorado near the shark buoys. Temperatures: 80 during the day, 71 at night. MARLIN - A few fish reported here and there, but no groups seen as yet. DORADO - Shark buoys or anything floating still the best bet. TUNA - Mostly near the high spots. YELLOWTAIL - Good fishing at the entrada down deep. You will need to use a shooting head. CORVINA - A few near the bridge at the entrance to town. SNOOK - Devil's Curve produced several larger fish. SIERRA - A fair bite out near sand beaches. PARGO & GROUPER -Chartreuse Clousers down deep with slow retrieve is producing some good catches of five to 10 pound fish.
