Shorts, T-Shirts ahd Fairly Good Fishing EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., Nov. 21, 2001 .. IN GENERAL: Hotel boat skippers report that the wahoo they'd been seeing off Cabo Pulmo are missing this week. There's an excellent variety of fish, just not as many being caught; but a wide variety including triggerfish, pargo, cabrilla, ladyfish, and a few roosters. Some dorado are still being taken and a very few marlin. Sierra fishing is still an early morning affair, but the great numbers of fish are no longer there. Steve Yoder, from Carnation, Wash., brought his four sons ranging in ages from 11 to 17 back to the East Cape for their first saltwater fishing trip. They fished on a cruiser and each boy managed to catch a fish: dorado from 10- to 15-pounds and a small rooster. I don't think this will be their last time to fish the Sea of Cortez! AIR & SEA: Air temperature - low to mid 80's and beautiful. We have been xperiencing a bit of northerly wind during the past few days, with the strongest being in the late morning and afternoon. .. OFFSHORE: A very few dorado, a few tuna and an occasional marlin. .. INSHORE: Working from a panga, you can expect some action with small to medium sized roosters at the first arroyo north of Los Barriles. There are a few other species mixed in. .. BEACH: Your best bet is still the arroyo from north of Los Barriles to Punta Pescadero. The water to the north is in great condition. The water to the south is getting better, but with the north winds it is making it tough. If fishing to the south, we suggest you try in front of hotel Rancho Leonero. There have been a few good-sized roosters as well as some ladyfish. Both the airlines and the hotels are offering great discounts. Give Yvonne a call for more information about some of the specials being offered. >BILLFISH - The odd marlin, but ya never know. >YELLOWFIN TUNA - Right now they're off Punta Pescadero. Tomorrow, who >knows? >DORADO - Day by day. Yesterday (11/20) it was good. We haven't had any reports about today yet. Look for buoys and floating structure. >ROOSTERFISH - Lots of smaller fish cruising all along the shore from the arroyo north of Los Barriles to Punta Pescadero. With some very nice fish showing occasionally at Hotel Rancho Leonero. >>JACK CREVALLE - Some are being seen along the beach. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Scattered at best. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rocky points are holding a few quality pargo, with good fishing at Rancho Leonero. Several quality fish have also been reported down by Rancho Buena Vista. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatch.html MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., Nov. 21, 2001 .. IN GENERAL: Flat calm balmy weather this week with temperatures in the mid-70's. I'm still wearing shorts. Not only did the marlin show up in good numbers, but wahoo, tuna, yellowtail and sierra came out to play as well. A few adjustments to the teasers and the marlin were much more cooperative and stayed in the pattern long enough for everyone to get plenty of shots. Pink billfish babies were just what marlin were looking for and Michael and Cynthia Garrity, Bozeman Mont., both caught their first billfish ever on the trip. Cynthia also managed to get some great video footage of a marlin taking the fly right at the swim step. Marlene White, Radford, Virginia, while previously having caught marlin on conventional gear, had never caught one casting and she ticked that box during the trip and has the photos to prove it. MARLIN - Good action from seven miles above Cabo Lazzero to north of the Thetis Bank. DORADO - Only a few here and there. TUNA - Some bruisers up on the bank to 100 pounds. YELLOWTAIL - Lots of firecrackers from Punta Hughes to Cabo Lazzero in 100 feet of water. CORVINA - A few scattered throughout the bay. SNOOK - Devil's Curve produced several this week. HALIBUT - Sand beach above Magdalena City produced fair results. SIERRA - Great early morning bite at Punta Belcher and Sail Rock with a few barracuda and spotted bay bass mixed in as well.
