EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO WED., NOV. 28, 2001 .. IN GENERAL: Not many hotel boats are out this week, but the few reports we are getting indicate that most of the fishing is still taking place to the north. A few boats have ventured to the south, but with limited success. There’s an excellent variety of fish, just not as many numbers being caught. You can pretty well count on tuna, dorado, bonito skipjack, and a few roosters in the Punta Pescadero area. Sierra mackerel are still hard to find, but when they move in, you’d better have your wire leaders. A few boats have ventured to the south with limited success in the La Rivera area. AIR & SEA: We are having our first shower of the fall/winter season. There is one taking place as this report is written. It has been sunny during the mornings with the rain clouds blowing in each afternoon. Some days we have moisture and others we do not. The winds have been blowing each afternoon from the north or northwest. They have not been severe, though they have been felt. .. OFFSHORE: One or two marlin here and there, but not many. Still a few tuna flags flying from the hotel boats, with a couple of dorado thrown in. Both the tuna and the small to fair numbers of dorado have moved slightly to the north. .. INSHORE: Working from a panga, you can expect some action with small- to medium-sized roosters at the first arroyo north of Los Barriles. Other species are mixed in. .. BEACH: Your best bet is still the arroyo from north of Los Barriles to Punta Pescadero. The water to the north is in great condition. The water to the south is getting better. If fishing to the south, we suggest you try in front of Hotel Rancho Leonero. There have been a few good-sized roosters as well as some ladyfish. Both the airlines and the hotels continue offering great discounts. Give Yvonne a call for more information about some of the specials. BILLFISH - Very few marlin flags are flying this week. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Limited number off Punta Pescadero. DORADO - Here and there they are still being found under structure such as shark buoys or floating kelp patties. ROOSTERFISH - Lots of smaller fish cruising all along the shore from the arroyo north of Los Barriles to Punta Pescadero. Sometimes you can spot some off Rancho Buena Vista and there are some nice size fish occasionally at Hotel Rancho Leonero. JACK CREVALLE – We’re still seeing them along the beach. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Scattered at best. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Best bet are still the rocky points at Rancho Leonero. IN GENERAL: After a great Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings, our Marlin 101 group headed out to a sea that had turned grumpy overnight. High winds and big swells persisted for the entire trip making it tough fishing. On Fri. (11/23) we only made it out a few miles, catching one large wahoo (70 pounds) and headed back to the anchorage early. The following day we did manage to get up above the Thetis where we found the only clean water, but no marlin. Then, sliding back down swell, we found a huge school of porpoise feeding that had some marlin mixed in. In less than two hours we raised and cast to 10 fish. Britisher Ray Barker Smith, hooked one only to have it come unbuttoned after a few minutes. Sea conditions continued to deteriorate for the rest of the trip and the only other catches were small yellowtail, sierra and skipjack between Punta Hughes and Cabo San Lazzero in about 100 feet of water. MARLIN - Rough seas and off-color water brought the bite to a standstill. DORADO - A few reported near the entrada. TUNA - A few schools still up on the Thetis Bank YELLOWTAIL - Lots of firecrackers from Punta Hughes to Cabo Lazzero in a 100 feet of water. CORVINA - Everybody reported good catches this week, Devil’s Curve, power plant and the bridge all produced. SNOOK - Good catches with the largest being 17 pounds. HALIBUT - Several caught on sand beach at Santa Maria Bay. SIERRA - Slowed down this week from the good bite the last few weeks. We caught several in the same area as the yellowtail.
