EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., Dec. 22, 2001 IN GENERAL: The hotel boat skippers have had a rough week with the wind. They report a few dorado, tuna and bonito scattered throughout the waters. Inshore, fishing has been good in the morning for sierra and small skipjack. The main area for both the inshore and offshore has been La Ribera. It has a good bait population and the fishing has been taking place from the very early morning through mid-morning and then tapering off. The afternoon has seen fair action. .. OFFSHORE: The main area has been in the La Ribera region. There have been fair to good numbers of small-to-medium-sized bonito with a few dorado, tuna and skipjack mixed in. The fishing both to the north and south has been fair with the concentration being between La Ribera and Rancho Buenavista. .. INSHORE: Working from either the pontoon boat or a panga you can expect action, wind permitting, at the arroyo north of Los Barrilies for small to medium roosters and ladyfish. You can also expect fair to good action in the La Ribera area in the very early mornings continuing through mid-mornings becoming difficult as the wind increases. The area has had good fishing for sierra, jacks, ladyfish and trumpetfish. This is due to the good numbers of bait fish in the area. .. BEACH: Still your best bet is the arroyo north of Los Barriles to Pescadero. The water to the north is in better condition than the water to the south. This is due to wind. If the wind permit it, the fishing to the south has been good to excellent in front of La Rivera. This area is holding lots of bait and the very early mornings and late evenings have seen some good action for jacks, roosters, and the sierra. AIR & SEA: This week the temperatures have been quite pleasant. Daytime highs have ranged from the low- to mid-70s with lots of sun. The evenings have been quite cool at times. They have been from the low 40s to the low 50s. Early mornings have quite cool, due to the lack of cloud cover. This week we have had a lot north wind in the area. This wind is typical this time of year and can be quite strong at times. The area usually has a wind for two or three days and then tapers quickly. BILLFISH - Seasonally slow. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Right now they're from La Ribera to the lighthouse. DORADO - As always floating structure and buoys are a good bet. ROOSTERFISH -Lots of smaller fish with the occasional big one along the shore at the arroyo north of Los Barriles up to Punta Pescadero. With some very nice fish showing occasionally at hotel Leonero and in front of La Ribera. JACK CREVALLE - Large schools of small fish feeding on sardina in front of La Ribera. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Lots of small-to-medium off La Ribera. Just perfect for the fly. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Try any of the rock reefs near Punta Colorada. SIERRA - They have been in good numbers in La Ribera and are being found scattered both to the north and south. IN GENERAL: Looking at the SST map provided by http://terrafin.com/sstview/index.htm, it looks like the warmer water has filled back in all the way up to the Thetis Bank. It is a good sign for the offshore fishing. The locals panga fisherman are reporting marlin 20 west and schools of tuna inside if they are there. AIR & SEA: Mid 70s with cooler evenings. MARLIN - Hard to say with no one fishing offshore. DORADO - Shark buoys are still the best bet. TUNA - Look for them mixed in with the porpoise. YELLOWTAIL - A few firecrackers under the birds near Punta Hughes. CORVINA - Chartreuse Clousers almost a sure thing. SNOOK - Fair to good catches of smaller ones at Los Barriles and Devil's Curve. HALIBUT - Sandy beaches are your best bet. SIERRA - Punta Hughes producing the best action.
