Sat., Dec. 29, 2001 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Because of severe North Winds earlier this week this week, we arranged for our clients to fish out of Cabo San Lucas. This is a first for us, but we wanted our clients to experience the best that Baja could offer. The last couple of days the wind backed off enough to get in a few half day trips before the wind resumed. .. OFFSHORE: Several boat attempted to fish, only to return to shore early. .. INSHORE: With less wind in the mornings for the last two days, both sierra and jacks provided some early morning non-stop action. .. BEACH: There was some shelter from the wind early mornings up toward Punta Pescadero. If you get down in front of La Ribera very early mornings and late evenings you can get in on a great sierra bite. AIR & SEA: This week the temperatures have been quite pleasant. The daytime highs have been up to 78 with lots of sun. Evening temperatures were slightly warmer this week. We have seen VERY strong north winds in the area this week making the fishing difficult. BILLFISH - A few sketchy reports of fish on the outside. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Not much going on. DORADO - Pretty good up along the color line up by Punta Pescadero. ROOSTERFISH - Wind waves have driven most of the fish outside of casting range. JACK CREVALLE - Plenty of sardina to attract them. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Lots of small-to-medium off La Ribera. Just perfect for the fly if you can get to them. PARGO AND CABRILLA - Try any of the rock reefs near Punta Colorada. SIERRA - Pretty good early morning and late afternoon if the wind backs off. IN GENERAL: Windy conditions hampered the offshore fishing this week. Sea temps still are above 70 degrees in many areas extending above the Thetis Bank. Several trailerboats are in the area and hope to make their way up to Thetis in search of marlin, tuna and maybe a few wahoo. Up in the esteros, the fishing continues to be fair to good with corvina and snapper being the predominant catch. AIR & SEA: Mid- to low-70s with cooler evenings and some wind. MARLIN - Fair numbers are being reported by the panga fleet. DORADO - Shark buoys 20 west of the entrada are the best bet. TUNA - Look for them mixed in with the porpoise. YELLOWTAIL - A few smaller fish in 100 feet of water in front of Punta Hughes. CORVINA - Anything chartreuse will work. SNOOK - Look for them deeper in the water column with the colder weather. HALIBUT - Three to five pounders along the sandy beach west of Puerto San Carlos. SIERRA - Several hot spots including Punta Belcher, the entrada and entrance to Santa Maria Bay under the birds early morning.
