EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS Wed, Jan. 02, 2002 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: It is the time of year when you can expect a few good days and then the North wind rears its ugly head. When the boats get out, they are doing reasonably well with dorado and sierra providing most of the action. Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year. .. OFFSHORE: Not much action and few boats even looking. .. INSHORE: Not bad if the wind doesn't come up. A few dorado and sierra in front of La Ribera. .. BEACH: Same deal here – early morning until the wind comes can be fair. La Ribera is the best bet for sierra, jacks and maybe a small rooster if you are lucky. AIR & SEA: Temperatures ranging from a high of 76 to 54 at night. BILLFISH - Always the rumors, but few confirmed catches. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Under the porpoise is the best bet if you can get out. DORADO - Look for anything floating. ROOSTERFISH - Wind waves have driven most of the fish outside of casting range. JACK CREVALLE - Plenty of sardina to attract them. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Fair in front of La Ribera. PARGO AND CABRILLA - No one targeting them this week that I heard of. SIERRA - Pretty good early morning and late afternoon if the wind backs off. Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatch.html If you haven't ordered the new Guy Harvey Underwater Video featuring marlin at Magdalena Bay, you can do so at: http://secure-shopping-cart.com/bajafly/cart/cart17.html MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Wed., Jan. 02, 2002 .. IN GENERAL: As would be expected, the water is cooling off rapidly and with the cooler water the fish are continuing on down the coast. Up in the esteros, the fishing is fair to good and I am planning to fish there a few days later this month. AIR & SEA: Mid- to low-70s with cooler evenings and some wind. MARLIN - Few reports this week. DORADO - With the cooler water don't expect much more action until spring. TUNA - Look for them mixed in with the porpoise. YELLOWTAIL - A few smaller fish in 100 feet of water in front of Punta Hughes. CORVINA - Still providing good action up at Devil’s Curve and the power plant. SNOOK - This is a good time to try fishing the current. Cast toward the edge of the bank and let the current sweep the fly out into the deeper water and then try an erratic retrieve. HALIBUT - Try any of the sandy beaches in about 12 feet of water. SIERRA - Several hot spots including Punta Belcher, the entrada and entrance to Santa Maria Bay under the birds early morning.
