EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS Sat., Jan. 05, 2002 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: The best action both inshore and from the beach is before noon. Dorado and sierra have been keeping the diligent flyrodder busy. Off-color water along the shore has made for some tough fishing. Down at Punta Colorada, the early morning sierra bite has been great with the toothy critters eating See Through Deceivers with reckless abandon early morning. After the sun gets up, however, it’s all over. Rumors of large jacks crashing the bait close to shore up near El Cardonal had everybody excited earlier in the week, but the action was short lived. .. OFFSHORE: Not much action and few boats even looking. .. INSHORE: Figure on a ½ day and expect to catch dorado, tuna and sierra. .. BEACH: Sierra for sure and maybe a few jacks and roosters. AIR & SEA: High 70's during the days with cool nights in the mid-50's. Windy at times. BILLFISH - Keep hearing stories, but not many flags. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Up at Punta Pescadero around the shark buoys producing reasonable catches. DORADO - Shark buoys the best. ROOSTERFISH - An occasional small one. JACK CREVALLE - Plenty of sardina to attract them up at near El Cardonal. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few in front of La Ribera. PARGO AND CABRILLA - No one targeting them this week that I heard of. SIERRA - Excellent both from the beach and inshore. .. SHORT CASTS: For our Southern California readers – Gary will be at the International Sportsman’s Exposition (ISE Show) at the Pomona Fairgrounds next weekend, Jan. 10-13 with presentations on Magdalena Bay fishing opportunities. Drop by the Baja on the Fly booth to say hello or ask a question or two. See page 40 in the Jan./Feb. issue of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters Magazine. There’s a great review of Gary’s Magdalena Bay guidebook written by Peter Van Gytenbeek. He concludes the review by writing, “If you plan on going to Magdalena Bay, don’t go without this book.” Catch of the Week Photo: http://www.bajafly.com/weeklycatch.html If you haven't ordered the new Guy Harvey Underwater Video featuring marlin at Magdalena Bay, you can do so at: http://secure-shopping-cart.com/bajafly/cart/cart17.html MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Sat., Jan. 05, 2002 .. IN GENERAL: Good weather and plenty of action in the bay and outside around the entrance. Reports from offshore with few boats even looking. Several trailer boats are in the area, but no word on their trip so far. AIR & SEA: Mid- to low-70s with cooler evenings and little wind. MARLIN - No one targeting them. DORADO - Same as the marlin, but I doubt that there are many left. TUNA - Still a good possibility mixed in with the porpoise. YELLOWTAIL - All you want at the entrada. Mostly smaller fish. CORVINA - Still providing good action up at Devil's Curve and the power plant. SNOOK - This is a good time to try fishing the current. Cast toward the edge of the bank and let the current sweep the fly out into the deeper water and then try an erratic retrieve. This technique produced some smaller fish to eight pounds this week HALIBUT - Don't waste your time. Stick with the snook and corvina . SIERRA - Watch for bird schools on current rips at the entrada.
