EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS Sat., Jan. 12, 2002 EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: From sunup until mid-morning continues to be the best bet. Tuna and dorado are being found near Punta Pescadero outside and around the shark buoys. Skippers are finding an occasional marlin offshore by the few boats working the area. The sierra bite inshore and from the beach still is providing the best early morning action. Don't forget the wire bite tippet. An olive See-Through Deceiver should do the trick. .. OFFSHORE: Not the first choice right now. Stick with the inshore. .. INSHORE: Early morning for dorado, tuna and sierra. .. BEACH: Sierra for sure and maybe a few jacks and roosters. AIR & SEA: Pleasant daytime temperatures with cooler evenings and some wind. BILLFISH - A few scattered through out the Las Palmas bay. YELLOWFIN TUNA - Stick with Punta Pescadero and use 350 grain shooting head to get down in the water column where schoolies tuna are hanging out. Try a chartreuse Baja Deep Diver and a slow retrieve. DORADO - Shark buoys the best. ROOSTERFISH - An occasional small one. Look for the telltale dorsal cutting through the bait schools. JACK CREVALLE - If you see the pelicans diving, do not pause, do not stop! Get there in a hurry and cast quickly. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Always fun on the fly. PARGO AND CABRILLA - When the sierra quit, try the rocky points with a small chartreuse Clouser. SIERRA - Excellent both from the beach and inshore. .. SHORT CASTS: Congratulations to Brian Laying and his ISE Team for a successful inaugural International Sportsman's Exposition (ISE Show) at the Pomona Fairgrounds. Gary will be presenting Magdalena Bay Fishing Opportunities at 5:30 today (Sat.) in the Adventure Theater. Drop by Baja on the Fly at booth #753 to say hello or ask a question or two. We have not yet seen the latest issue of Saltwater Fly Fishing magazine, but we've been told there's a great informative article with excellent photos on us. IN GENERAL: Time to focus on the action inside the bay. Outside the entrada there are a few yellowtail and some skipjack under the birds. Up in the esteros, corvina, pargo and snook have taken up residence and are looking for a free meal. Look into the deep holes up against the mangroves and try either a chartreuse Baja Deep Diver or a Clouser and a slow retrieve. A couple of the better spots are Devil’s Curve and Los Barriles Estero. Monday afternoon (1/14) I will be driving down for a three day exploratory trip to fish the esteros around Puerto San Carlos. Several clients called this week and will be meeting us at Puerto San Carlos to help us explore a few secret spots I have been wanting to check out. AIR & SEA: Fair skies and mid 70's daytime temperatures. MARLIN - Pretty thin. I think it is time to focus on the inshore. DORADO - Same as the marlin, but I doubt that there are many left. TUNA - Best action is further down toward Cabo on some of the high spots. YELLOWTAIL - Still going off at the entrada CORVINA - Plenty of these to practice on. SNOOK - Good catches in several different areas. HALIBUT - Not the first choice right now. SIERRA - Switch to wire tippets and look for the birds from Belchers to the entrada.
