Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Boca Grande

Spring and good fishing. 3-19-06web Warm weather and good fishing! It’s Spring Time and the fish are biting much better. Baitfish showed up last week and both fish and fisherman are glad to have em. Fishing has kept me too busy to catch up here. I took a day to catch up so I wanted to let you know it time to get a reservation if you don’t have one. Snook season is into full swing. Lots of smaller fish and some slot fish, even a few oversized big ones. They are scattered around the Charlotte Harbor area. Traveling from the rivers towards the gulf. I have seen a few fish around the pass but none taken yet. The trout and reds have picked up also. It’s time for the king mackerel to move in. We are hearing about some Spanish but they are not showing good yet. We have had some mild cool fronts that are stirring the gulf up every few days. As soon as the waters clear expect good action with both mackerels. Some minnow schools are here. We just need the surface temps to warm and bring everything up to the surface. We like the screaming terns to help us locate the schools of hungry macks. Larry Perkins and Charles Jesch enjoyed two great days of fishing last week. We had snook, redfish, trout, flounder and a tripletail for fish dinners and lots of action. Charles wanted to catch fish on his fly rod. We tried and had numerous shots on Tuesday but could not land anything. Thursday we got my rig out and he landed a nice four-pound jack. My rig had a line one size over the rod weight and is much easier to cast with breezes blowing. It was wonderful to watch Charles cast with the right gear. He had so much fun. He actually enjoyed the jack on fly more than the ten-pound tripletail on spin. I saw a tarpon hook up on Tuesday morning while I was cast netting baitfish. It was a big hundred pound class silver king. It’s early to target them but we do have a few moving into the area. More will be moving in every moon phase. Expect good action on C&R snook and tarpon in May. I do have some open days but you need to book your reservations as soon as you can for the best dates. Let’s Go Fishin’ soon captain Van Hubbard
