Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Boca Grande

Mack attack in full swing. Fishin’ report for March 29, 2007 from Captain Van Hubbard. These last few days have been wonderful. The winds have backed down to a sweet breeze and fish are biting. We are fishing live minnows on light spinning gear and catching both Spanish and king mackerel. The size is from legal to twenty-five pounds since Friday. The Spanish bite is hot and kings just take over regularly. We start out slow trolling and then shut down when the reels begin screaming. I drag a bag of frozen chum to help hold fish near the boat. If we have any dead minnows I pitch these whenever we get fish on. It’s crazy running around the Dorado with two or three macks smoking the drags. Everyone is excited and having fun. The Spanish are preferred eating to most folks but kings are bigger and the most thrilling. We had to crank up the big motor today to catch up with several kings; the largest was twenty-five pounds. I rig us up with light spinners, usually the 40 Boca Quantum on live bait rods loaded with fourteen pound Fireline. You want at least 250- 300 yards of string, because big kings are fast. I add several feet of twenty to thirty pound fluorocarbon and less than a foot of #2 coffee wire. You can go thru a bunch of rigs so make up some before the trip. It’s hard enough to tie anything with mackerel slime all over your hands. Be sure and carry plenty of ice to holds fish so thay don’t spoil. It’s late and daybreak comes early so good night. Let’s Go Fishin’ soon, Captain Van Hubbard
