Fishing is great. 4-7-07 web report. We enjoyed some great fishin and good catching this past week. The weather and waters are looking great; blue skies and crystal clear waters. Our Gulf and bay waters are as clear as the Keys waters around the windy days. We are experiencing some windy weather for the weekend but I’m glad to get a day or two off the water after two hard weeks at it. We saw our first school of tarpon on Tuesday, and then caught a bunch of king mackerel. We caught all the Spanish and kings we wanted on most trips recently. Inside the snook are not up to normal yet but the size is better than average. Chip Gaylord caught a 33.5 inch slot fish on Monday trip with his nephew. We ended the week with a couple of smaller snook on Friday’s trip. Our host Ted Williams did release a big 37 plus inch trophy before the winds slowed our days catching down. The jacks are moving in and we had one over 10 pounds. These are a real challenge on light gear. Baitfish are not easy but we have enough to fish with. We had two young ladies out on Wednesday and they caught some ladyfish. While our catching was slow we saw manatees, eagles, dolphin, and gorgeous waters on our trip. We even saw a small 8 feet wide manta ray; the first I have seen in a decade or so. Thursday the winds were latter than predicted to build so Merry Beth and I took her niece and nephews offshore to check on the kingfish. Minnows were everywhere but no kings for us. We did see a bunch of barracuda and several cobia. We landed one undersized cobia and hooked several others. One cobia was chased but a big bull shark. This created some serious excitement with the crew. We could see everything in the water and on the bottom in 40 feet of water. That shark zoomed after the hooked cobia and everyone’s eyes were larger than pie plates. It has been wonderful to enjoy such crystal clear water and lots of fish. I do have a few days open this month and some next. The snook are just warming up ands should peak later this month. Macks are around and ready to play. Tarpon are coming soon. The weather is getting better every day. Let’s Go Fishin’ soon! Captain Van Hubbard.
