Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Boca Grande

Tarpon are hot as a firecracker. 6-26-07 Tarpon have really turned on. We enjoyed a couple of great days of tarpon fishing. last week we ended up with a strong west winds that hurt our ability to see and work fish. This week started out with calm clear seas and lots of tarpon. Monday we went out and located a big beautiful bunch of happy tarpon lazily waiting for our crabs. Tommy Boyle and his friend Guy Flick had driven over from the East Coast of Florida for a few days fishing. Guy was lucky to be the first angler to hook up on our second cast of the day. The silver king, about 120 pounds, jumped and dragged us around for about forty minutes before allowing us to get some good shots as we released her. Then several boats showed up and the school broke into several smaller bunches which we worked for the rest of the day. Tommy had a couple of bites but was not blessed with a solid hook up. We caught a few minnows and they each released a nice snook to wrap up our trip. Tommy’s was about 10 pounds and jumped several times. The wind was stronger the later half of the trip and made it much harder to stay on the fish. Tuesday was awesome. We located an even larger school of happy tarpon before “help” arrived today. We had several bites before we managed a solid hook up this time. Sally Rumph of South Carolina had set up a fishing trip for her husband Brad. Gentleman that he is Brad insisted she get things started. We had a time of it and after a couple of false starts we landed Sally a big tarpon well over a hundred pounds. We had several jumps that just blew us all away. We had to relocate more fish after the reinforcements arrived to take over the first bunches we located but it worked out fine. We finally got Brad a solid hook up and he landed a fish slightly smaller than his wife’s. I forgot my camera today but Sally got some shots of Brad’s fish. I’m looking forward to seeing them when she shares em I’ll post them on the photo pages. I am excited about how well the fish are holding this year. I am looking forward to some good action well into July this season. Let’s Go Fishin’ soon. Captain Van Hubbard. www.captvan.com [email protected]
