I have still been very busy fishing and the wind has still been blowing steady from the East for three weeks straight. Fishing has been improving daily you just have to find a good spot out of the wind. I have been taking nice keeper size redfish on every trip, with some nice snook in the mix; trout are still plentiful but I haven’t been targeting them lately. The snook seem to be finicky on the take so you need to get your presentation right. The reds are starting to school and are taking a variety of artificial’s, from plastics to plugs and of course a good live well full of white bait is a must. You need to match the color of the water to the color of the bait. I use a more natural color in clear water, and switch to colorful plugs and plastics in stained water. The tarpon are here in good numbers in Boca Grande Pass. I have been hooking good fish on every trip to the pass on tarpon jigs. If you never seen the tarpon fishery here in Boca Grande it’s worth the trip, and if you want to fish it and have never done so I suggest hiring a guide to take you out and show you the ropes this just isn’t the place for someone with no experience. Capt. Johnny Johnson booked a trip this past week for two boats for a day on the flats and asked me to be the second boat. Great bunch of guys from Southwest Farm Credit, ACA, from the Georgia and Florida branches. Turned out one of the guys was from my hometown and was a friend of the family. We didn’t manage a whole lot of fish, the east wind kept the water pushed out of the harbor most of the day, but we had a good time. Capt. Johnny managed to hook a nice tarpon for his group and then finished it off with some redfish. I picked up some undersize snook and had to finish the day catching some trout so these guys could have a fish dinner. I highly recommend Capt. Johnny and he can be reached at Bay Dawg Charters 941-575-0149. With the moons we are having the tides are back up and you can expect to find the reds closer to the bushes. The snook are moving towards the passes for the spawn and the season will be closing at the end of this month. The tarpon are in the pass and can be found all over the harbor just look for them rolling early in the morning and they should hold there most of the day. Over the next month or so you will have to read about more tarpon fishing as I book a lot of trips for the Pass fishing.
