Boca Grande, Florida Fishing Report

Boca Grande

Mild Winter Great Fishing Trout fishing has been outstanding with as many fish as you care to catch. Jerk baits cast to pot holes in the 3-5 water range is a can't miss proposition. I like 1/8 ounce jig heads, none painted with a natural colored 5 inch bait. Start out in an area up wind or current and drift casting to visible potholes. Experiment with retrieve, speed, and jerking motion, its not the same from day to day. Red fish for me are either there or not there. Some of the areas I fish are being pressured hard buy mullet fishing efforts. If you find the fish a great tactic is cut bait soaked on the bottom. If the fish are there they will find it and eat it. Snook have mostly moved in to the river mouths and canals and will hold up until winter is passed. Free lined shrimp is the best bet. When rigging, forget the terminal tackle, and rig line to line and connect the smallest hook you can get by with so the shrimp will look natural. I am starting to book trips for the upcoming Boca Grande tarpon season May-July. Most good guides book up early so planning now will insure you fish with a veteran guide that can get the job done.
