PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT APRIL 25TH TO MAY 1ST PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT APRIL 25TH TO MAY 1ST, 2001 BILLFISH: A big jump up on striped marlin this week, with seventy-five percent of anglers hooking up to these billfish, ranging in size from 95 to 150 lbs. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was ninety-five percent. Marlin were caught throughout the week, but sighting them wasn’t a guaranteed catch, as many times, they simply weren’t hungry. One of the better days was had by Jean Pierre Bigotte from Weston, Ct. aboard “Rebecca” (which incidentally was our top boat again this week), on April 27th; he released three striped marlin and boated 14 yellowfin tuna. A couple of days later Ken Simonds and friends from California, also released three stripers and landed two tuna and a dorado, aboard “Tracy Ann”. We had several other people that had two marlin in a day, as well as smaller game, such as Rob & Dawn Ziebarth, from Fullerton, CA, aboard Adriana, on 4/27, Wayne Childs from Mesquite, Tx, on Andrea on the 28th and John Franklin on the 29th aboard Karina. The perfect day, in my opinion, was had by long time Cabo visitor, Gerry Richmond from Las Vegas, while fishing on Ruthless on April 30th – one striped marlin released, a 60 lb wahoo boated, along with 8 yellowfin tuna and one dorado; it doesn’t get much better than that, at this time of year. Boats fished pretty much headed out to two areas, off of Chileno 3 to 15 miles out or off of the Old Lighthouse, which has been one of the most consistent spots this season. Pisces anglers caught a total of 27 striped marlin this week, of which 25 were released. As we close this report, cold weather is again descending on Cabo, which we hope will not adversely affect the fishing too much. OTHER SPECIES: Yellowfin tuna are still dominating the Cabo fishing, with boats catching anywhere from 1 to 22 on a daily basis, with weights standard at 15 to 25 lbs. The tuna are being found both in the Pacific and the Cortez side with the Pacific producing slightly higher numbers. Quite an increase on dorado this week, with one’s and two’s taken throughout the week in the 20 to 36 lb category. Less wahoo this week than last, but still some nice fish up to 60 lbs. Inshore the pangas did fair on sierra and amberjack, with the odd yellowtail here and there. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Beautiful all week, with nice seas, up until the last day of the week, when skies turned cloudy and the wind picked up. LOCATION: Chileno and Old Lighthouse.
