PISCES FISH REPORT MARCH 1-9TH, 2002 PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT MARCH 1ST TO 9TH, 2002 BILLFISH: An up and down week here in Cabo, but more down than up, with just thirty-three percent of charters catching marlin. Pickings were slim again this week, with no one set location working, though nearly all of the action was on the Cortez side. Many boats saw marlin and even had them mouth baits, but it was hard to get a hook-up. The fish were spread out, but once found, some boats had good luck. Galen Golz fishing with his wife and 6 year old son Michael from Deephaven Mn, had a fabulous day aboard La Brisa, catching and releasing three stripers. Valerie, also had three several days later, this time for George Henry from Gastonia, N.C. A few other boats had double marlin days, such as Rebecca on the 9th of March for Mark Peterson and Michael Swanson, both from Minnesota. This same day Craig Hill and family, fishing on Karina, released two striped marlin, boated two dorado, as well as a Mako shark that took half of the dorado they were reeling in – the Hills are from Soda Springs, Idaho. People from up north seemed to be the lucky ones, Michael Longstroth and Gladys Maham, both from Boise, Idaho had a striper apiece aboard Adriana on March 3rd. Pisces anglers caught a total of 23 striped marlin this week – all but one were released. Weights were good at 120 to 190 lbs. OTHER SPECIES: Dorado were the most widely caught species this week, though there weren’t a great deal of this either. Fish of the week was a 70 lb’er caught by Joe Fusco aboard Libre, on the last day of this report. Thirty-five percent of boats caught dorado this period, with weights ranging from 15 to 35 lbs. Most charters got one or two fish and more rarely up to four. Yellowfin tuna catches plummeted this week, with hardly any caught. We had a total of 9 on Pisces, with weights average at 25 lbs. Quite a few skipjacks were caught – token catches, when nothing else was happening, but some were big, up to 25 lbs. Inshore action was pretty slow for pangas, with just the odd roosterfish here and there, more skipjacks then anything else, a few sierra and snappers. LOCATION: 95 spot, Chileno, Cabeza de Ballena, Cabo Real – one day Golden Gate. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Like the fishing up and down, mostly sunny, party cloudy, some days calm others with whitecaps.
