PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT JUNE 4TH TO 10TH, 2003 BILLFISH: Quite an improvement this week, with the beginning of this report showing catches of one or two marlin per boat, plus the odd tuna and dorado here and there. Catches started to become more consistent and boats began spotting lots of stripers. Some anglers saw up to ten fish in a day, but the trick was finding the hungry ones. The marlin would come up to the bait, mouth it and even swim away with it for a couple of seconds, before dropping it - indicating how full their stomachs were. Fishing followed this pattern throughout the week, but by Thursday, we started experiencing our true Cabo weather and catches leapt to as many as three stripers per boat, being released, with more sailfish appearing and a few blues too. One of the top catches this week was aboard “Andrea” for Roy Ward, Michael Newins and David Borrill, all from New York – they released three striped marlin and boated a nice 50 lb wahoo, on July 8th. As if this wasn’t enough, out on this same boat on July 10th, they released two sailfish and another striped marlin – way to go guys! Last day of this report was the best, with “Tracy Ann” releasing three stripers for Mike Feistner and friends, from Tennesse and Virginia respectively? Rebecca also had three this same day for Barb & Joseph Dehaven, from Savannah, Georgia. “ Catches at the start of the week were mostly on live bait, towards the end of the week though, lures were more effective. Pisces anglers caught a total of 40 striped marlin this week, with all but one released and four sailfish all released. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was seventy-seven percent, with forty-three percent of charters catching billfish. OTHER SPECIES: Not a great deal of smaller game this week, in fact marlin outnumbered everything else we caught. We did have some nice tuna, with the largest of the week caught by David Bunn, aboard “Tracy Ann” on July 8th, weighing in at 127 lbs. Other fish were between 20 and 40 lbs with boats seldom getting more than one, though the odd vessel here and there did have up to half a dozen school size fish. Dorado catches were on the slow side in fact we had just nine this week up to 40 lbs, though we should add that David Bunn, mentioned above, also had the largest dorado of the week at close to 70 lbs. Just a few wahoo and the odd rooster inshore. LOCATION:20 –30 miles out from San Jose, 3-5 miles out from Punta Gorda, Destiladeres, 12 miles from La Playita, ½ mile off of Santa Maria, 95 spot. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, now turning hot, Pacific is at last fishable, seas moderate. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 77 F BEST LURES: Live bait, yellow, guacamaya.
