PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT June 2nd to 8th, 2006 BILLFISH: There were very few complaints in Cabo this week with an overall catch success rate of ninety six percent for all species combined. This number was made up mostly of striped marlin, but we also had fair amounts of tuna, dorado and quite a few wahoo too. June 5th was one of the best days; “Valerie” released three striped marlin and boated four dorado for Dan and Kenneth from El Dorado, Arizona. This same day “C Rod” released four stripers for Cathy and Phillip Grandall from Virginia. Next day out “Tracy Ann” has three marlin released plus a wahoo for David Palmer from Huntington, Texas. Boats averaged between one and three striped marlin each. The fishing was quite spread out ranging from Punta Gorda to Cabeza de Ballena on the Cortez side. Live bait was the most effective method of catching marlin. Pisces anglers caught a total of 86 striped marlin this week of which 82 were released along with one sailfish. Our source in Puerto Vallarta reported jaw dropping catches this week, of three big fish one after another. First up was a fish close to 900 lbs, which was a black marlin caught on June 3rd by Ari Levy from Dallas Texas, which took him three hours to boat, after hooking the fish with a live bonita - Ari used 130 lb spectra. A 750 lb blue was next on June 7th for Keith Kraemer from Clovis, California. Followed by a 620 lb black marlin for Danny Cox from Palm Harbor, Florida also on June 7th. SPECIES: Thirty six percent of charters caught yellowfin tuna this week giving a total of one hundred and fifty one fish, most in the 20 to 35 lb class. One exception was a one hundred pound fish landed aboard “Andrea” on June 8th by Brittany Holmes from St. Stephen, South Carolina – she also released a striped marlin – both catches were at Cabeza de Ballena. Some boats loaded up on tuna with catches from 11 to 23 fish, such as Tracy Ann, Libre and C-Rod, all being found up to 18 miles off of Land’s End. Dorado catches were almost as high percentage wise per charter, but less fish were actually caught. Thirty-three percent of boats caught dorado with the averaged catch of one to three fish per boat. Weights were standard at 15 to 30 lbs. Some wahoo catches, for a few boats in the 35 to 55 lb class – “Ruthless” was fortunate to catch three off of San Jose on June 8th. Inshore the Pacific began to calm a little and pangas ventured that way for the first time in the week. Skipjacks and the odd rooster were taken. LOCATION: Punta Gorda, Chileno, 11.50 spot, 95 Spot, Cabeza de Ballena, Cerro Blanco – Land’s End up to 18 miles out. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, seas mostly calm on the Cortez, still a lot of wind on the Pacific and fog offshore, it calms down for a while, but the wind usually picks up again –there is a big temperature difference between the Cortez and Pacific. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F on the Pacific 78 F on the Cortez. BEST LURES: Live bait for marlin, blue/white feathers and Cedar plugs for tuna, as well as small marlin lures, dorado took green/yellow and guacamaya colors.
