Cabo Fishing Report for Dec 24-29, 2001 Capt. George Landrum Fly Hooker Sportfishing [email protected] www.flyhooker.com Weather: The skies have been blue with a few high clouds passing through. Cool and crisp when the sun goes down. Winds have been 6-12 mph out of the North and Northwest. Temperatures have been in the high 70’s- low 80’s in the daytime dipping down to high 50’s low 60’s at night. (Son Of A Son Of A Sailor) Water: Temperatures have been in the high 70’s with some warm 80 degree water from 95 spot up and around Gordo Banks. This water is the result of a warm current eddy that has worked it’s way through over the past week. Although the water around the banks has been somewhat green, it’s probably from the winds coming down the Sea of Cortez and should be clearing up. The seas are calm and flat right around Cabo. The Pacific side has been a little bit choppy all week due to the prevailing winds. On the 28th the water was blue and the fishing was good out all the way and on the 29th everything turned green. Hopefully it will clear up again soon. (Havana Daydreamin’) Bait: No problem on the Caballitos and Mackerels, still running $2.00 a piece, Sardinas have been available, around $20 a scoop here in Cabo and they are running about 1 inch in length. (Manana) Fishing Billfish: The Striped Marlin have been steady all week, most boats that targeted came in with at least one or two flags flying. Mostly up off the lighthouse. That warm water should produce some up around 95 and Gordo Banks. Tossing live baits to tailing fish is starting to produce a bit better but there are still a large number of fish that have no interest. (Treat Her Like A Lady) Yellowfin Tuna: Bite has been pretty good about 26 miles north up the Pacific side. These fish have been Dolphin associated and have bit well on lures when they have been found. The fish have been running 15-100 lb in size. Not too many reports coming out of Gordo Banks due to the green water. (Jolly Mon Sing) Dorado: On again off again. If you are the first to find the floating debris, they are there. A few schools still hanging around and when the bait is there the bite is hot. The fish have been running mostly in the 10-40 LB range. There have been quite a few fish found closer to shore and while not large, they have supplied fairly steady action for a few boats. (One Particular Harbour) Wahoo: With the full moon coming up, there should be a good bite this weekend. There have been a few caught when fishing the floating debris for the Dorado. A lot of the flags flying could be for Sierra though, don’t be fooled. (Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season) Inshore: Sierras are here, have heard of some decent size ones up the Cortez side, but still small on the Pacific side. Some nice Roosterfish action if you have the right bait! (Lovely Cruise) NOTES: Whales are spouting now and we are seeing more everyday. I am looking forward to getting a chance to go out for a few hours in the afternoon and doing a bit of sightseeing this week. All right, I couldn’t hold back any longer on the music. "Fly Hooker" Daily Fish Reports “FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 24 DECEMBER, 2001 Sam and Cristina Anderson, along with their daughter, fished the “Fly Hooker” today. There was a lot of action for them out on the Pacific side of the Cape. A large pod of dolphin was found feeding heavily and there were a lot of Yellowfin Tuna mixed in with them. The fish were in the 20-30 pound class and provided tons of fun with double and triple hookups. The total catch at the finish line was 14 Tuna in the boat and their daughter had caught the largest fish. They trolled on the way back and then Sam took honors for the largest fish of the day when they hooked up to a very nice bull Dorado. A smaller fish was a companion and it was brought into the boat also. Big smiles all the way around on this trip! Thanks folks and we look forward to seeing you again. “FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR CHRISTMAS DAY, 2001 Bill Farah and his wife just wanted a few hours relaxing on a boat, cruise the shore a bit and see some of the attractions of Los Cabos from the water. It was very nice as we put-putted around the arches, checking out the seals and sea-lions, the birds nesting on the rocks and the artwork mother nature was doing on with her tools of water, stone and wind. We strolled up the Pacific side, past the beach resorts and we close enough in to shore to see the sand riffled on the bottom. We spotted balls of Sardinas against the shore and found a large school of Manta Rays , stark black against the white sand bottom. Almost to the light house there were families taking advantage of the holiday to spend quality time at the beach. We kept a look-out for whales but did not see any. It was a very nice two hour cruise! “FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 26 DECEMBER 2001 John, John, Charles, Andre and Andre’s sons Mike and Dave fished the “Fly Hooker” today. Andre and his sons are staying out on the East Cape and the wind has been blowing too hard to fish up there, the boys were going nuts with nothing to do. With everyone settled in the boat Juan and Manuel headed out to look for the Dolphin pods that had supplied the action on the 24th. Three hours of trolling ensued with nothing happening. Finally luck was with them and it was at the 22 mile south mark that they saw fish breaking the water. The action did not last for a long time but what they had was quality action. One Yellowfin Tuna estimated at 50 pounds was brought into the boat and so were 5 in the 12-30 pound range. The big fish of the day was one that got away. Charles fought the Tuna for about a half hour before they could see color below the boat. The Tuna was just out of gaffing range when it pulled loose and the estimated size was 100 pounds! There were plenty of Tuna fillets to take home and everyone had a great time. Until next time, Tight Lines! “FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 27 DECEMBER 2001 With the East Cape winds howling we have gotten several days of bookings from Fly Fishermen who need calmer conditions in which to fish. Today we have the Verne Olsen group and they really want to get something hooked up on the fly. Their guide is Jeff and if Juan and Manuel can find the fish, Jeff will do his best to get them hooked up. Today Juan and Manuel thought that the best chance would be to go out south again for the Tuna. A twenty pound Tuna on fly is a lot of fight and with the fish having stayed in the same area for the past few days there was a good possibility of it working out. When they arrived in the area there were dolphin there but they were scattered and they were not working. One of the boys had been sick since 5 minutes out of the harbor and they decided after about 20 minutes of no action to return to the harbor and try again on the 29th. We will keep our fingers crossed! “FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 28 DECEMBER 2001 The Don Barger group of fly fishermen were our anglers today and Jeff said that any kind of action would suffice. With remembrances of yesterdays blowout they decided to try inshore today! Plenty of small Sardinas for chum and a few larger live baits were picked up on the way out of the marina and they headed for the beach just to the east of the lighthouse. There was a lot of action happening early but by 8:30 it all died off. One of the boys did get a Roosterfish of about 20 pounds and they caught some Sierra also, but none of it casting the fly, most of it with live baits on the fly gear. A nice Dorado of about 20 pounds was hooked up but managed to escape. Later they went offshore and found on Striped Marlin tailing. They tossed bait to it but could not arouse it’s interest. “FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 29 DECEMBER 2001 This was the second day of fishing for the Verne Olsen group and it was decided that perhaps the inshore action might be a little better today. Again the bite dropped off to nothing after 8:30 but prior to that they caught 6 Sierra. A lot more fish were missed but as yesterday the fish were caught with live bait fished off of the fly gear. Later on they went off shore but the action was dead. Sometimes chicken, sometimes feathers and today it was feathers. Fingers crossed for better success in the future! “FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 30 DECEMBER 2001 Mark and his two buddies wanted big fish, not Sierra and Juan and Manuel were only too happy to try and provide that type of action for them. Off shore they went and after a bit of searching they found a dead whale floating. The whale had not been dead long and there was just one Blue Shark feeding there. They caught and released the Shark and continued the search. Later they came across a 6x6x12’ piece of wood and caught 7 nice Dorado off of it. All in all a very nice day and everyone had smiles when they came in!
