Cobia arriving in Port Royal Sound area

Beaufort

After a very unusual strectch of cold weather this late winter and early spring, our water temps have finally gotten over 70 degrees, and the Cobia are starting to show up in the sound and Broad River. They are certainly late compared to normal years, when we see them pour into the sound around the last week of April. Fishing was really hot for them at the offshore wrecks and reefs this past week. I did hook up a really big fish in the river today, and saw one other. As the moon is this Thursday, more and more should come in to spawn. Greenback Herring and a variety of cut baits on the bottom all work, with Menhaden being my bait of choice. I really enjoy sight fishing them if the conditions allow us to see them on the surface, and throwing live baits, eels, or artificial jigs all work well. The Redfish bite has been fairly slow the last two weeks, but should pick up along with the trout bite shortly.
