Cobia have arrived in Port Royal

Beaufort

The cobia bite is on in the Port Royal Sound and in the Broad River. The river is unique in the fact that inshore anglers have a shot at a big Cobia. These fish normally come in to the sound and river on the big moon tides in April. They have showed in force this week. Saw the weigh in picture of a 77 pound fish taken this past Wednesday. Also heard of another at 72 lbs. Our fish don't get much bigger here, with our state record currently in the mid nineties. Most folks are fishing live Greenback Herring, which we catch in the tide rips on Sabiki rigs. Dead baits include Mullet, menhaden, and squid. Live eels are another good option, and as the season progresses the bigger Menhaden will show and are really Cobia candy. Getting ready to crank up my Cobia season on Saturday. I sure would like to see our winds lay down so that we might sight fish them.
