Report for Long Island Sound

Bud Barton and Wayne Heyland of Greenwich endured the sweltering heat on August 5, but were rewarded with a boatload of large bluefish up to 13 pounds--caught under a bunker school at the mouth of the Five-Mile River. We then got into topwater action off of Bear's Rock and Cockenoe. John DiMelio of Norwalk hosted a trip for his dad, sister and brother. Everyone had fun with striped bass, porgies and blues. Mike Seiore and a friend visiting from Florida had a so-so start, but we finally hit the blues in great numbers all around Cockenoe Reef, boating seven and releasing more than a dozen. They also enjoyed a by-catch of stripers and porgies. Former Norwalk residents, John and Janet Green of New Milford, fished with us for the first time--after selling their 25-foot Grady White, the "Slap Shot". The Greens are excellent fishermen and they caught blues of all sizes, first in Norwalk Harbor, then in the Five-Mile River, and finally right on the surface offshore, with their largest fish weighing in at 14 pounds. John said "It seems like old times...."
