CRAPPIE CANDY

Bull Shoals

Wax worms can make an EXCELLENT crappie bait in some situations. You can breed them yourself. You'll feed them a mixture of cereal and honey. They will survive for long periods so you'll have some whenever you need them. Just make sure to keep them refrigerated as well. When cold, they can go for extended times without eating. Here's how to breed them: Any glass or plastic container can be used. You need at least a 3-gallon container, but bigger is better. Either punch small holes in the lid, or tape fine mesh screen over the top. Simply make a bedding of a cereal and honey mixture, throw in a couple of twigs for habitat, and add your wax worms. Periodically add cut up pieces of apples and greens for extra food if desired. If you want colored wax worms, food coloring to the bedding for the desired colors, much like coloring worms. At room temperature, the pupa will 'pupate', or make cocoons, and turn into adult moths. Leave them alone and they will mate, lay new eggs and die. You don't even have to remove the dead adults. The new larvae will take care of them for you. There you have it... "Crappie Candy" on call! :)
