A windy weekend made for tough fishing this past week. We took the John Ward group out to Montauk Sunday morning, May 19th, for some fluke fishing. With winds at 15 to 20 mph against the tide and a cold front, we were still able to pick up only one keeper fluke. Didn’t see any other boats taking in any fish. We decided to scrap the fluke fishing and head out a few miles where we scored several nice sea bass. Along with a few keeper striped bass, we were able to put some nice fillets in the cooler. Gary White and family came down for an afternoon trip Sunday. Again, strong winds against the tide made for rough conditions on the local reefs around Fisher’s Island. We were able to duck into Stonington Harbor for a few keeper fluke and some schoolie bass. When the tide finally turned around at sunset, horrible conditions turned into perfect conditions and allowed us to troll up a 43”, 35 lb. linesider on a parachute jig. If the weather gods cooperate, striped bass fishing will be phenomenal this year and the fluke have shown up along the Connecticut shoreline already. So far we have tallied over 100 bass over 28 inches this year with most being catch and release. Hotspots to fish include The Race, Watch Hill reefs, Bartletts, and Fishers Island Sound.
