Eastern Long Island Sound and Block Island Sound

Long Island Sound

The Race was very good to our customers this past Sat. We were able to catch fish on the troll during the slower part of the tide and also drifting when the tide began to rip. Blues have shown up in big numbers. Thirteen fish in the 5 to 7 pound range were pulled in as well as a half a dozen keeper striped bass. Diamond jigs did most of the work. I have seen more and more blues showing up each year since their big drop off several years ago. The nice thing is the striped bass numbers have stayed pretty consistent with bigger fish being taken each year. The fluke action has been pretty steady as well, Saturday and Sunday’s groups hit the fluke inshore on a couple local reefs. At least 2 keepers to every short. Try bigger baits when targeting those doormats. Looks like a low pressure system moving in this weekend so look for the fish to move into deeper water till the high prevails. Finally, hickory shad have begun to show up sporadically in the Mystic River which begins the start of our livelining season. Can’t wait to see the first cow striper inhale one of those feisty Hickory Shad.
