Long Island Sound

This past weekend brought out the Tokar group friday afternoon for a striper/bluefish trip. They had a slow steady pick of bass and blues tolling the Race and also scored some on small plastic sassy shads in the middle race. Saturday, the stapleton group came out to pick up some pointers catching bass and blues. They also were able to get some bass and blues working over the race which was slower than usual for the race. They still learned a few tricks of the trade and had fun doing it. Saturday afternoon brought down the Conklin group for their annual fathers day trip. They were rewarded when we spotted some Hickory Shad working over a pod of bait. We picked up a dozen shad and hammered the bass. The fish were all between 34" and 42", nice to see the shad showing up this early. Sunday, Gary Richards came down for a fluke trip which turned into a catch and release trip for the most part. Between the four of them they caught over 90 fluke but only 12 were keepers with the biggest going around 21". Hopefully some bigger fish will move in and be able to avoid the draggers out there constantly dragging the bottom. With the Hickory Shad showing up I only expect the fishing to break out like gangbusters. Will see how many 50+ lb. fish come over the side this year. Last season we saw three of them come aboard so I expect a few more this year.
