The word for last week was tarpon. They have really started to move in closer and are feeding on both bottom baits and free lined live baits. Catfish tails seem to work best on 7/0 circle hooks while anchored. Drifting free lined threads on 7/0 circles with a split shot was a close second. Look for them in 18- 30 feet of water and use your depth sounder to locate them in the water column. If sharks is your thing you will also pick up plenty of sharks drifting these live baits. Hammer heads, spinners, and dusky's are all around and will challenge the angler with their strength and speed. The backbay bite still holds strong with some quality redfish action around the mangroves and oyster bars on high water. Shrimp under a float or cut ladyfish produced the best bite. Around the mangroves, make sure to get your baits into the shadow lines and look for deeper water around the edges of oyster bars. This is where the fish seem to be hanging out. The tout bite has slowed somewhat but can still be caught over the grass with shrimp under a popping cork set-up.
